Shameless plug M1 pre WWII Springfield

I just listed an extremely nice pre war Springfield rebuild:
http://www.GunBroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=475542325
This is a low numbered six digit rifle with a receiver dating from May, 1941 and it has a virtually new USGI replacement barrel.
These pre Pearl Harbor receivers are hard to find and sought after by collectors. This is an extremely nice rifle with only a couple of worn spots to the finish and a tiny ding down at the bottom of the stock. The barrel gages as new and if it was fired again after it left the depot, I'd be surprised. If you've been looking for an M1 (and you should be), this would be the one you'd have to consider. The guy who sold it to me-- Selling it makes him some sort of Satan according to a few of our members (or perhaps a Muslim or militant atheist?) gave me all of the CMP papers, so it is fully documented.

That looks to have one of the lead dipped receiver heels. Those have their own little collector niche. Nice rifle.
The light from the flash makes it show up, in normal light it is very hard to notice so I didn't mention it in the listing.
For those unaware: A "dipped" receiver was one in which the receiver heel was submerged briefly into molten lead, or Lead Dipped Drawn, which would slightly reduce the hardness found in early receivers and made them more resilient for grenade launching, which was developed for the M1 well into it's series production. Some of the "Dipped" receivers have a beautiful two-tone plum coloring...This one does not.
Thanks for the info on the lead dipped receiver heel. I have seen the 'two tone' look like this one, and always wondered what caused it.
One of these days I am going to have to get a wild hair and acquire an M1. That is certainly one that could spark a wild hair.

That two-tone effect is only found on fairly early WWII rifles. By mid war, the chemical composition of the steel had been changed to make the receivers less brittle so that dipping was no longer needed. Because my interest is in post war M1s, I really don't have a good photo of the plum color two-tone, but I've seen some M1s where the colors are really impressive.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
