slow computer question

With McAfee running all the time, I'm sure I've still got malware, spyware, and every other type of ware you can think of.
Can't easily get rid of that since its a recognized firewall at work.

Can't turn off wife's Admin status because then she can't download all the 'free' programs she runs across (which is another issue entirely)

Anyone have a recommendation for one of those online "faster PC" sites? Or should I take things to the geek squad? Things are sloooooow lately.

Get a program called "crap cleaner" from download.com, install it, run it. There is a button on the left called "Tools", click on that and REMOVE McAfee and all other programs you know nothing about. For a firewall use comodo also from download.com and stop with the "free" spyware infested programs.

Online spyware removal is a scam and while geek squad will do the job at $95 an hour......

DO NOT GO TO GEEK SQUAD UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EVERYTHING they do is with programs that are FREE, and found online.

Run this in Safe Mode: malwarebytes

On start-up, hit F8 to get into Safe Mode.

It's what I use, if somebody, in the family, downloads a Trojan Horse.

I disagree. I don't think this is another issue. I think it is THE issue.

+1! I run McAfee too without any problem. They might be free but are memory huggers ... not to mention other (potentially) harmful stuff.

Also, are you maxed out on memory (RAM)?

Get rid of McAfee, and get a better antivirus/malware program. McAfee is over-priced, and offers limited protection at best these days. There are so many better programs out there.

Installing more crap on your computer won't speed it up. You need to clean your hard drive, update your RAM, and potentially replace the processor and hard drive to make it run faster.

YEP! 100% the problem, get rid of it. Norton will slow down your works but will work.

Hit cntrl-alt-delete and see how many processes are running in the background.

Thirty to forty is not that unusual.

Comodo makes a fairly decent free cleaner.

Also need to check your registry.

Of course, if you are at work, you would be well advised to do nothing on your own.

    This might also help:

Close all programs, disconnect from internet and clear trash bin.

    Run malwarebytes - full scan

    Defrag hard drive

I am authorized home use of the Norton/Symantec and McAfee Corporate edition. For many years, I've used the Norton and this is the very first time I have ever used the McAfee and IMHO opinion it is much better than than the Norton. Perhaps, that is probably why we use it in the SIPRNET (classified system) too!
