I can remember well in 1978 taking a shotgun to school on the school bus,it was in a zipp up blue leather case, when I got to school I carried it into the principals office and stood it in a corner because that day at noon the principal was taking several of us boys rabbit hunting using his beagles,we left after we eat lunch,5 of us boys jumped into the back of his pickup with our shotguns and we went to the mayors farm hunting.times have changed real fast

In the mid 80's we all kept shotguns and .22 rifles in our cars in the school parking lot so we could go rabbit or squirrel hunting after school. My graphics art teacher wanted me to bring in a German SxS that my grandpa left me because he was into guns and loved quail hunting. It was no big deal and I don't remember of hearing about any school shootings.

Just earlier this year my school had a bomb threat because my friend got mad at someone for writing things about his girlfriend in his notebook. Well, my friend found the notebook and wrote that the school was going to blow up the on Friday, hoping to get the other student in trouble. His consience got the better of him, and he crumpled up the piece of paper and threw it away. Turns out, someone "found" the threat in the garbage, an investigation by the NYS police is mounted, and he is expelled from school. We had backpack checks the whole week and I had a shell in my pocket I had forgotten to throw out after I went to the range before, and it is confiscated and reported to the priciple, and probably the police. My friend also had buckshot pellets he brought in to show some people taken away and reported.

when deer season hit there wasnt a truck in the parking lot that didnt have at least one, sometimes two if ya rode with a buddy, shotguns in the window. nothing was ever said. for ag and industrial tech, we were required to have pocket knives because it was understood that these were tools. we had a "new substitute" one day who had something that needed cut, cant remember what it was, she couldnt find any scissors so out come about eight pocket knives. she sent us all to the principle. he asked why we were there and then told us to go back to class. now a days we would have all been suspended.

In 1958 in Bloomington Mn, I was in study hall and saw a large flock of Canadian honkers land in a marsh near the school. I asked the teacher if I could go and try to get one. He said I could make the class up. I had my mod 12 in the car and got a nice honker. That for sure would not happen now.

I had the principle go deer hunting with me after school once. I had my 30-30 in my truck and he had his rifle with him. I told him about this really big buck I saw the day before and how I didn't get a shot. He and I hunted the woods behind the school for several days before he finally got a shot on that deer. Nice 10 pointer. This was 1968. Back of the football stadium there was huge oak trees. Squirrel season I used to shoot a few from those trees every year before school started. I would skin them out and the lady in the cafeteria would wrap them up in wax paper and freeze them for me . I would go by after school and get them. She and I would share the squirrels.

Scenario 1: 1957. Jack's father is a decent, sober, hardworking man who teaches his son how to handle guns safely and respect the law and the game when he hunts. He teaches jack that guns are for hunting enjoyment. Jack father never carries a gun, and teaches Jack not to. Jack's mom watches Jack and makes certain he grows to become a decent, honest person. Jack never gets in any serious trouble.

Scenario 2: 2009. Jack's father is a howling hater who listens to Michael Savage and Rush Limbaugh, and who curses at the democratically elected president, who he calls "a mulatto" and other vile names. Jack's father teaches Jack that a "real man" is always prepared to kill one of them liberals, illegals or blacks Jack's mom is working the night shift at Wal*Mart, because Jack's father was laid off from his union job and they now live in a trailer. She has no time for Jack.

Jack ends up in jail at age 19. Twenty years for which his father blames "those people".

early 80's we all had guns in our cars, the better rifle teams shooters had their own rifles. Everone had a .22, or a shotgun.
    One kid had a Mini-14.

Last day of school junior year we all brought our .22 pistols to shoot at the rifle range. I had Dad's Browning Challenger II.

Guess what, not one school shooting.

to always be prepared to kill to protect the family I have no problem with,I work away from home alot,I have a 17yr old son,you break into our home while I am gone you better be ready to eat a load of buckshot,,,as far as the top part of your statement I like Rush and will listen to Michael Savage when he is the only thing on talk radio even if I dont agree with him 95% of the time,,I believe in the constitution and believe he has the right to say it...As fas as calling the President a Mulatto,,,,if you will pick up your webster dictionary,,,IF YOU KNOW HOW TO READ,,,,you will find out he is a Mulatto and that is not a derogatory word,,it just means the first generation offspring from a black and white

1958- Moved to Kalifornia. No black students or teachers but we are proud of our one Asian student. Not like those nasty segregated schools down South.

You all will find this funny. It's kind of long, but bear with me.

In 1966 I was a typical college student: poor and hungry most of the time. Then I noticed that the pecan tree in the backyard of the house where I rented an apartment (really a converted back porch and colder than an icebox).

So I got out my little Savage model 24, a box of .22 shorts, and shot me some dinner. I cooked up squirrel at my buddy's apartment; he had a kitchen of sorts. He supplied the potatoes, and we had squirrel, mashed potatoes and gravy. Did it about twice a week until my landlady figured out what was happening to all her precious squirrels.

    Boy! Did she raise hell!

But we had gotten used to a squirrel dinner every now and then, especially when we were broke. What to do?

Another friend of mine, a co-ed by the way, noted that the walnut trees on campus down by the drill field were absolutely full of squirrels. Problem solved!

So off I went with my little 22 and soon bagged four or five of the fat little critters. Did it again about a week later, and kept it up for several weeks, and then the campus cops caught me!

Whoa! The head cop told me in no uncertain terms: I had to share my bag with him or else find another place to hunt.

Seems he liked squirrel, too, and his wife was a real good cook.

The following year, I was advanced ROTC and ate off the money they paid me. I gave up squirrel hunting on campus, but never forgot how good a fried squirrel drum stick was when you haven't eaten for 24 hours or so.

Jack never gets in any serious trouble.Scenario 2 changed to reflect reality.

Scenario 2: 2009. Jack has never met his father; he isn't sure who he is. Jack's stepfather-of-the-week is a howling hater who listens to Jeremiah Wright, Margaret Kimberley, Jesse Jackson and Glen Ford and reads the Black Agenda Report everyday, and who cursed at the previous democratically elected president, whom he called "stupid Texan" and "liar" and other vile names.

Jack's stepfather-of-the-week teaches Jack that he has been suppressed for centuries, and he should take what he wants from rich white folk who "don't pay their fair share."*

Jack's mom is working the night shift at Wal-Mart, because Jack's newest stepfather-of-the-week is addicted to crack cocaine and spends all of the family's income to support his habit.

She has been attacked and mugged by hoodlums three times as she walks home from work. She has no time for Jack because she is still mourning the death of her youngest son who was killed by in a drive-by shooting as he sold drugs on a street corner.

Jack ends up in jail at age 19 for a series of drug busts and violent crimes including murder of a local convenience store clerk. He only receives twenty years, but he and his latest stepfather-of-the-week blame "those white people" for forcing him and Jack to be failures.

    * The phrase "Don't pay their fair share" was taken from a speech given by Barack Hussein Obama.
