Good camping food

I guess I've gotten a little used to being in the woods the way we do it at work. I'm going to go camping this weekend at a state park, at a camp ground, and get this IT even cost money to use the spot. So now here's the question, since this camping is going to be all civilized, what kind of food should I bring in the cooler? I'm thinking steak, and some potatoes to throw in the fire and bake, but what else am I missing.

The fixing for foil dinners...using either burger of fish

To me it does not really matter, anything cooked over a fire tastes great....well almost everything [;)]

    Veggie Pack.
Cut up potatoes, carrots and onions in a foil pack or aluminum pan, add a little water, teryaki sauce, lots of butter and an obscene amount of seasoned salt and garlic. Seal well. Cook over fire for about 45 min. with the last 5 min. lowered into the fire to burn the potatoes on the bottom. You can add chicken breasts or drumsticks(skinned) on top. Coat the chicken with seasoned salt and it steams nicely. We practically fight over the burnt stuff on the bottom.

It depend on where I'm going, for how loing, and can i take a cooler with ice. Ordinary coolers willwith ice will keep stuff cold for a couple days. I often take frozen stuff and let it thaw out over the weekend. Cans will not have to be kept cold. My son like canned raioli and stuff like that. You can get just about any kind of meat, fish, poultry cooked and packed in a can if you look around the grocery store.

What you cook also depends on how you are cooking. Despite what you see in the movies, its hard to cook a decent meal over an open fire, even if you have a grill or a dutch oven. I take my double burner coleman stove(converted to gas) when I'm driving to the campsite or my small single burner backpack stove if I have to hike in.

Speaking of bacon.. I buy the precooked stuff. you dont have to cook it or even heat it, but most important, you dont have to keep it cold.

.....Years ago, we found some canned bacon that we took camping. It was really pretty good and of course didn't need to be kept cold. I've searched all over the net and can't find it anymore.
    .....Need I say........Ramen noodles ?
.....Don, I like the eggs in a bag idea. We usually bake and freeze a breakfast casserole like that, but cooked, frozen, reheated eggs can get kinda watery sometimes.
.....If you're driving and not hiking, bring along your favorite pie. Late night snack, alternate breakfast, munchies, mmmmm, pie, good.

Pancakes cooked on an iron skillet over an open fire are the greatest. But I guess at camp they would be called griddle cakes.

Ever cook cornbread over an open fire? It's about as simple to fix as you can get.

Add salt to white corn meal to taste (a 1 tsp. per cup ratio will usually get you in the neighborhood). Mix equal amounts of this meal with BOILING HOT water, then form it into thin patties and brown 'em in hot grease that just covers them. The boiling water actually cooks the corn meal, the frying just makes the outside a little crispy.

This is genuine po' folks country fare, known in these parts as hot water corn bread. [:p]

when camping with meat it is a good ideal to seek out some dry ice, it will keep it well frozen, but try not to let is get in contact because it will not thaw very well, it is a good ideal to use a Styrofoam cooler with a few small holes in it to let the assimalating gases escape, and do not keep it in an enclosed area where you are

nothing like bad meat to spoil a weekend, no food and contaminated everything else

Alot of times for breakfast we make sandwiches with either english muffins or crossants, hash brown patties, bacon, sausage patties(the maple ones from walmart are really good)and fried eggs. We just have sandwiches for lunch. Dinner is burgers, brats, hotdogs, steaks or pork chops. Dont for get the chips, beer, potato salad, potatoes, beans, extra beer, emergency beer, beer for my new 'friend' that I just made and beer for after you get back home and unpack.[:D]

Camp by a farm... Grab some corn peas carrots... and if youre feeling spunky more than likely there are cattle around.

But take plenty of budweiser, in case the "farming" doesnt work out [:o)]

Pizza sauce with fixens. I have one of the electric sandwich makers now, but we used to make the hobo pies as kids when we camping. The whole meal would be pies. Pizza, cheese and then dessert of apple or cherry.
