A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
But one advertising agency did a good job of
Putting that figure into some perspective in
One of its releases.
A.
A billion seconds ago it was 1959. (I'm a billion seconds old)
B.
A billion minutes ago was inbetween BC and AD .
C.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.
D.
A billion days ago no-one on earth walked on two feet.
E.YET...
A billion dollars only lasts 8 hours and 20 minutes
at the rate our government is spending it.
Sadly, the recent trend in government makes the number, billion, seem paltry as they toss trillions around like we have the ability to print it overnight.
While this thought is still fresh in our brain...
let's take a look at New Orleans ....
It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.
Louisiana Senator,
Mary Landrieu (D)
was asking Congress for
250 BILLION DOLLARS
To rebuild New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. Interesting number...
What does it mean?
If you get past the fact that it isn't a national responsibility to rebuild a city then;
A.
If you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans
(every man, woman and child)
Your share is $516,528
B.
Or... If you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.
C.
Or... If you are a family of four...
Your family gets $2,066,012.
We know it wouldn't take that much money to make the city right so what plans are there for the balance?
People always complain about every household needing two incomes to get by in this world believing inflation has erroded the value of a dollars. I contend it takes a second income to pay the taxes for the generous givaways like the one Landrieu requested.
Consider these taxes, new in the past century.
Building Permit Tax
CDL License Tax
Cigarette Tax
Corporate Income Tax
Dog License Tax
Federal Income Tax (Fed)
Federal Unemployment Tax (FU TA)
Fishing License Tax
Food License Tax

IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax)

Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax
Telephone Recurring and Non-recurringCharges Tax
Telephone State and Local Tax
Telephone Usage ChargeTax
Utility Tax

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago...
And our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt...
We had the largest middle class in the world...
And Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
In the most recent debate, Gingrich said "We should not raise taxes to fit the size of government we should reduce the size of government to fit revenue"
If we don't get that done, America will have to get married and put the wife to work to make ends meet.[:o)]
Somehow, someway; people are going to have to accept responsibility for their own well being

"As I think of this bill, and the fact that the more progress we make the deeper we go into the hole, I am reminded of a group of men who were working on a street. They had dug quite a number of holes. When they got through, they failed to puddle or tamp the earth when it was returned to the hole, and they had a nice little mound, which was quite a traffic hazard.
Not knowing what to do with it, they sat down on the curb and had a conference. After a while, one of the fellows snapped his fingers and said, `I have it. I know how we will get rid of that overriding earth and remove the hazard. We will just dig the hole deeper.'" [Congressional Record, June 16, 1965, p. 13884].

The only thing between B.C. and A.D. is a nano second of time. That's changed a lot even since you posted this, let alone since it was written.
Nevertheless the point is well made, but for the concept of time itself. The concept of prehistoric time is hard for the average person to imagine because of the amount of time involved (millions to billions of years.)
I've read articles trying to express how much a billion (or whatever) dollars is trying to equate it to miles. (A billion one dollar bills placed end to end would reach to the moon and back to earth X amount of times.)
Same thing. The distance to the moon is hard to fathom.
Time or distance is easier to understand in smaller numbers that we can relate to. Hundreds or thousands versus millions or billions of years or miles.
I read this recently.
I don't know what the current U.S. debt is, but its several Trillion dollars, depending on which source you use.
So, How much is a Trillion dollars?
Answer;
If you had a Trillion dollars, just sitting there in a pile, not accruing interest, you could spend a million dollars a day for seven thousand (7,000) years, and still be a millionaire.
I'm not claiming the accuracy or truth of this, its just something I read recently.
If some benefactor were to give you a dollar per second around the clock, you'd be a millionaire in a bit over 12 days.
If he continued to pay you at that rate...24/7/365...it would take him about 32 years to bring you into the billionaire's club.
And about 32,000 years for you to make trillionaire.
