I was at DJ's sport and loan today. they have a Winchester garande for sale that looks to this layman like a nice rifle. the serial number is 2,808,000 or so. the stock is solid the bore is good and the blueing is about 85% or better except for the lower tube where it extends from the stock beneath the barrel (is that the gas tube?)
They are asking 1349 for it...
Whats the scoop?

Are you sure that is the correct serial number? 2.8 million is well outside the Winchester block, although there are duplicate numbers with Springfield. Is the barrel original? What about the rest of the parts...Are they Winchester or replacements from other manufacturers? Is the stock a Winchester with visible markings (that is worth five hundred bucks all by itself)? No where near enough information provided to even take a guess at the price.

I could call them about it but, as you can guess, I am no Garand expert. I looked for cartouches but didn't see any and I don't recall the barrel markings. The stock had a metal butt plate with a storage door the receiver was marked Winchester on the flat behind the bolt I double checked the serial number to make sure it was million and not hundred k
Here is their phone number Bruce will know everything about this gun without even getting up. He has a genius memory and he will be completely honest. 425-486-1919 they are open til 6 I think (it's 5 now)

Unlike the barrels from all other manufacturers, WWII Winchester barrels will not have visible markings in the chamber area when the operating rod is retracted. You have to remove the rear handguard in order to see the Winchester markings, which are stamped on the top of the barrel.

Odds are that this is a Mixed Parts Mongrel on a refinished Winnie receiver, not likely worth anywhere near the asking price.

Winchester production only went up to 2,536,000, so the SN you gave has to be a transcription error. If the barrel is an original Winchester, you can probably see the WP logo on the right side of the barrel when the op rod is pulled back. If you see a script "WINCHESTER" on it, the barrel is a 1950's replacement.

EDIT: Original? A WRA/GHD cartouche? I'm dubious. Is he saying it's original, or are you? Generally, a WWII rifle requiring a new barrel will not have the original stock. A barrel date of 1947 usually means a complete rebuild by FN in Belgium.
