I watched the tape of Kentucky Derby winner, Barbiro, break his leg in the Prekness.. What a horrifying sight. What is the best prognosis for a horse who destroyed his leg so badly? would such a break be a result of bad genetics? (IE weak bone structure)would he be a good candidate for breeding and will the rest of his life be filled with pain or will it heal well enough?
Man, that animal has heart... I watched him try to gather that broken leg back under him and try to keep running....what a spirit I hope he survives

He could still be bred, but I guess they have a rule that says the stud has to do the deed--nothing artificial.

My own horse, Gloi, went through the same basic prodcedure. The recovery was long and painful, but eventually he was able to walk on all fours, run and play. He was never "normal" again, and had to be separated from the rest of the herd for his own safety, but he was alive and enjoyed all the extra attention he received for the rest of his life. Most horses in such circumstances are simply put down because they can no longer serve a practical purpose and the prohibitive cost; very few "everyday" horses get the chance my Gloi got, or that Barbaro is getting.

From what I read this morning he was already standing on the right hind leg and useing the other to scratch his ear. So that to me says that he is healing well after his surgery, which must have cost massive $$$$$. Hopefully laminitis wont set in. The horse ended up with a plate and around 27 screws if I remember correctly. If he heals he will become a stud horse, if not they will have to have him PTS.

Guy on the radio this morning said thats why horses have long faces- if they break a leg they get shot & they know it.

A Horse walks into a bar.

The Bartender asks, "why the long face?"

The horse says, "I'm HIV positive".

So how many of the things we do or buy outside of our jobs genuinely have a "practical" purpose. If I want it, like it, can afford it, and it doesn't hurt or take away from anyone else, that is enough to qualify it as "practical". In the right setting, a horse is as good a companion as a dog for many people, and that's good enough.

Well down here in Texas we gather cattle with 4 wheelers, pickup trucks, helicopters, planes, sirens, calls, etc... but i will bet you one thing - if you asked a true cowboy (or cowgirl) what the best thing to use to gather cattle on a day-in-day-out basis, they would all answer a good horse and good dog. By experience - that is absolutely my choice. Let a steer sull in the middle of a pond or stream and see which one of the above methods gets them out. If you think they have no practical purpose, perhaps you never used one practically...

I like a guy that will take care of his animals regardless of their monitary value - glad DWS's Gloi got that and Barbiro seems to be. I am certain both a priceless to their owners.....

We use 4-wheelers for the most part to work the cattle. 4-wheelers are faster and when you have 1600 acres to move cattle on, time matters. The problem arises every now and then when a stubborn bull or maybe some cattle will head to a water hole when you try to move them from grove to grove. A horse will walk right in. I keep two horses around. They don't work much and will come running when it is time to eat. Don't care tho, like to watch them. Don

Sometimes they get bold and will roll a 4-wheeler. I was sat on one time! They do know not to mess with a horse. Don
