If you can get over to Chattanooga TN there is a great Civil War firearms Museum at the Chickamaugua Battlefield. Depending on where you are in NC, it might only be a couple hours' drive to Chattanooga.

I can't remember the name of it, but there's a Fort near Havelock Atlantic Beach, NC, called Fort Macon that I really enjoyed taking a tour of...
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

In Atlantic Beach (Morehead City area) where I grew up there is Fort Macon...A HIGHLY recommended stop for some really cool history!! I believe this is the fort that HenryO was thinking about. Check out the web site for details. It's a great place to spend the day. Beach is just a climb over the sand dunes away from the fort, so bring a fishing rod!! Historic Beaufort is 5 miles away...colonial maritime history (Blackbeard and such) abounds.
Further down the coast below Wilmington there is Fort Fisher. Neat place, but nowhere near what Ft Macon has as far as structures and exhibits.
If you're into some older history, Manteo (Lost Colony) has some neat stuff from pre-colonial era.
Hope this gives some food for thought!

Have a great time, wherever you end up!

The Museum of Natural Science (or similar name) in downtown Raleigh, has a good `NC in the Civil War' section. (This same museum also has Carbine William's restored workshop on display.)

The CSS Neuse has been pulled out of the river and is on display just off Rt 70 in New Bern.

The gun colection at Chickamauga is beyond comparisonthe battle field is good also, you can bypass the battle fields in Chattonoga, too comericalIf you go to Ckickamauga stop in a town named Franklin, and on main street there is the Macon County historical meusem, It shows the history of a small town in the south from the removal to modern times.
By the way franklin NC is where the last shot of the eastern campaign of the civil war was fired[:0] I know the monument is in Waynesville but the shot was fired in Franklin. [:)]
