Uniform question for the military folks...

PATBUZZARDPATBUZZARD Member Posts: 3,556
edited May 2006 in General Discussion
I'm going to be attending the NRA convention this weekend in milwaukee WI. I have read that they are encouraging military and police to show up in uniform. Well I am in a bit of a quandry, what uniform would be appropriate for this convention? BDUs? Class B? A? I don't want to be overdressed for the occasion... Any input is welcome.

If you are not active duty, I do not think wearing a uniform is appropriate; if you are active duty, I would call a local recruiter and ask which uniform is appropriate to the occasion.

i dont know about the nasty guard...ahh i mean the nat'l guard [;)] BUT in the marines "bdu's" were ONLY allowed in federal buildings and gas stations in case you could not "pay at the pump" (assuming you are off base).

if you still are under contract, i would contact your HQ and ask them what you can wear and or what they want you to wear.

personally, id dress formal/casual (civies...collered shirt, belt, all that jazz...clean shaven, fresh haircut) and just have them recognize you for your service...instead of being the center of attention.

my .02 either way have fun and win me something good!

I say screw the media and anyone who buys into the hogwash and twists they throw at Americans.
I don't think you would be overdressed in a military uniform of any kind but I would probably wear the BDUs if it were me and be proud.

Actually. The best fanciest uniform you own would be good too.

    Sorry I wasn't any help.

Seeing people in BDU's walking around walmart isn't cool....probably not a NRA Convention either.

Service Dress with all your medals.

    My 2 cents - Charlies w/ ribbons - not BDU's
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

NRA = Political Lobby, you can't wear your uniform to a political rally, or at least that has been my understanding. Apparently the organizers are unaware of this.

I was wondering if in today's climate that would qualify as a "Extremest group"

I always choose to never draw any unneeded attention to myself or my uniform. You're already going there to support the NRA, why would you be obligated to dress any differently than anyone else who attends?

If I was going to wear a uniform (which I wouldn't), I would go full dress with ribbons and medals, if you're going to be out there drawing attention to yourself dont' 1/2 * it.

I cant get used to seeing anything but class A's off base.
Field dress was left in the field and fatigues were left in the barracks or you were in deep doo doo.

    From AR670-1

    j. Wearing Army uniforms is prohibited in the following situations:

    (1) In connection with the furtherance of any political or commercial interests, or when engaged in off-duty civilian employment.

    (2) When participating in public speeches, interviews, picket lines, marches, rallies, or public demonstrations, except as authorized by competent authority.

    (3) When attending any meeting or event that is a function of, or is sponsored by, an extremist organization.

    (4) When wearing the uniform would bring discredit upon the Army.

    (5) When specifically prohibited by Army regulations.

That said, if you do go in uniform, I would recommend against going in BDUs. Class As would probably present the best image.

AR 670-1 is available online and will tell you what civilian events are appropriate for military uniform by active and prior service soldiers.

check with your legal officer. your uniform MAY be a conflict of interest.
remember, being in the military as a serviceman means wherever you are, like a flag, your uniform represents the branch youre in. though you may feel its ok, the ARMY may not.
    best to ask.
rule of thumb, if in doubt, go stealth. CIVATTIRE. your haircut will give you away anyway.[:)]
if you get the ok, by all means, bravos. camo is like wearing garage mechanics overalls. too tacky.

Isn't it the Khaki time of year?

Short sleeve dress Khakis with ribbons and parade cord. Might as well be lookin' good.

Uh, they still DO wear khakis, don't they? [?]

Lowrider; only knows about the Army of the 1960's.[:D]

I'd call one of those costume rental stores and rent a confederate general's outfit. Complete with plume and saber. They are pretty cool to wear and it is really spiffy if you can get the sweetie into a hoop dress.

People will think you are a student at The Citidal.

I would wear B's but only after checking all regulations and with the c.o.c. to make sure it is ok.

Sure Pat, I have my Citadel full-dress uniform you can borrow for the event. I can even scratch up a College of Charleston belle that'll wear a corset and hoop skirt to be your arm candy.

I am getting the impression that the overal opinion, which i do value, of this board is that it would be inappropriate. Seeing as some people have also voiced my reservations as to AR670-1 violations, I think I will dress in civies for this. It seemed like a good idea the time, but the more I think about the possible complications, the less feasible\logical it seems. Thanks to all that hvae voiced their opinion.

Now that all the "experts" have spoken.............
The NRA "Convention" in Milwaukee, is actually an EXPOSITION! (Pat you should've know this!) IT IS NOT A POLITICAL EVENT, or any other function that would/could bring "discredit" to the Armed Forces or the United States by way of Pat Attending. Unless you are appearing there as a representative of a company, private organization, etc. (many companies will be there, selling wares, services, etc) you're wearing of the seasonally appropriate Military Uniform (Class A's or B's , NOT BDU'S!)is perfectly acceptable.
BTW: Attending in uniform is supposed to get you a break on the admission price.
    [:)][;)][:)]
If you choose to go in uniform, so be it, just wear it PROUDLY!

I am amazed at the number that told you to wear civies. Where the hell is your espirit de corps? Maybe a lot of guys were in when it wasn't popular to wear your uniform or maybe they were never in to start with.

I loved going to weddings or formal occasions in my crackerjacks. Got to wear the miniature medals and wings and they really looked good!

Jarhead outfits look pretty good too, but ribbons would be appropriate for this function. Be proud of your uniform. Chesty was.

ADDENDUM; I just realized you are army so you may not know who Chesty Puller was.

hmmm,.. i would say if you are bent on wearing a uniform,.. wear your class A's,....if you feel you must wear BDU,. i would consider wear your DCU if you still have a pair,..i never noticed hom much the green BDUs look like poop smeared onto a tree until i got back from Iraq.

if it was me,...id go with nice slacks or jeans with a polo type of shirt, dont forget the "yes sir" "yes mama" stuff,... that will distingush you as either military or southern very quickly.

try and get a copy of Gen. Franks book and see if he will autograph it for you

    From my perspective only....

Wear whatever you like. You served. You went to the sandbox. You did it for the likes of all of us (US).

This is America. You're free to wear what you like, where you like, when you like. And you have stood up to keep it so.

I don't think it authorized to wear at a Convention. Unless of course you are actually REPRESENTING the Army in an official capacity. If you have any doubts, ask your Chain of Command.
