When I was a young man I recall the big double rifle cartridges selling for a dollar a piece and I thought "Wow."
Now you can't hardly buy 30-30s for under a dollar a piece.
Just saw an ad for once fired 45/70 brass at a dollar a piece. Empty cases for a dollar each.
Wow.

And someone with your job was making 10K a year back then. It's all relative.

Your library may have a reprinted copy of the Sears catalogue- 1896 and 1902 have been reprinted in hardback. Check out their 69 cent .22 revolver.
Price comparisons over a generation seem to usually track fairly well with inflation. Supply/demand made for investment opportunity.

Doc--try buying some 505 Gibbs, or some 375 H&H flanged.
308 Norma Mag.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
35 years ago Copper & Brass sales in Detroit used to give away 5 gallon buckets of 'cast offs' or scrap 'bar ends'. Those days are well behind us.
