Replacing factory shocks

I've got an 01' Dodge Ram and am replacing the front shocks. How do you get the top nut off the shock there is no nut mounted to the factory shock. On the shocks I bought there is a nut so you can put a wrench on them through the shock bracket and tighten em down. I got the passenger side off but had to cut the bolt with a sawzall to get the shock off the bracket but can't do that on the driver side due to the brack lines and other stuff in the way of getting the whole shock bracket up through. When trying to loosen the top bolt the whole shock spins so the nut just spins with the shock. I'm sure it is something simple at least I hope so I don't have to drive around on one bad shock and three new ones.
