I've seen many guitar players try to incorporate percussion by slapping the guitar; this is the first time I've seen it look like anything more worthwhile than pretension.

Interesting for sure but unnecessary gyrations IMO. He's obviously a talented musician but realistically, he can only use that approach in a song or two at most. Sort of like playing the electric guitar behind one's head or underneath one's leg. Novel. Innovative. Eventually boring.
