I've never been approached by athiests but I am routinely assaulted (figuratively, not literally) by the Mormons and even the bible thumper down the street; so to me fanatics are more of a bother.

The greatest atrocities ever committed on this planet have been in the
name of God. Atheists however usually dont care what anyone else thinks and have little or no desire to push their views onto someone else, so im going to go with fanatics.

The entire religous spectrum from athiest to fanatic's of all types is controlled by the tri-lateral commission and the UN.

    Its all George Bush's fault.

There are atheists who can be considered fanatics, as well as "believers" who try to get through life annoying as few people as possible.
I try not to get annoyed by either. If I get annoyed, whose fault is it? Is it their fault for believing in something I don't, or mine for somehow finding other's beliefs (or lack of belief) annoying?

Both. The atheist on this board are just as bad as the fundamentalist Christians. In evberyday life, it is easy to drive the JW's and Mormons away simply by learning about other religions, and telling them you are the opposite. For the JW's and Mormons, keep some rotted sushi in a tupperware dish by the front door closet. When you realize what they are, agree with them initially and make them take off their shoes at the door. Invite them in and pull out the sushi. Explain that you believe that those who truely believe in God can eat all manner of poison, and this is their one and only test, your chance, heaven or hell. If they don't leave right away, begin telling them how they are going to hell if they don't repent and confess your particular religion. Yell, shout, scream, roll on floor, and begin singing "a day in the life". They will not last.

Just to put a damper on the "atheist" thing, historically for decades the biggest and most powerful atheist bloc on the planet was the Godless Communists, and they are responsible for as much human suffering and as many deaths in the last century as any religious group.

Yes, I know atheism and Communism are not even close to synonymous, but atheism is one of the tenets of Communism, and I don't think its appropriate to cavalierly dismiss atheism as totally "harmless".

But as to which one I'd rather have knocking on my door Sunday morning, an atheist, a Jehovah's Witness, or some fanatical super-Christian, I think I'd pick the atheist.

Communists are our friends and allies. America imports more goods from Communist countries than any other country we import from.

Therefor since American's keep buying crap made by aetheists or communists I'd say fanatics are the worse in the American eye.

What is your definition of a fanatic? You don't define your term anywhere and it is used in too many ways by various people to have its meaning assumed. Tell us what you mean by the term.

However, in short, let's look at this:

Hardcore Catholics: Spanish Inquisition - surprisingly few were actually handed over to civil authorities for punishment (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08026a.htm)
Hardcore Protestants: Salem witch trials. A handfull of people killed from what I understand.
    Hardcore Athiests: Nazi Deathcamps.

I think the scorecard speaks for itself.

"Next time the religious freaks show up at your door, answer it in the nude. They won't come back."
    - So what is the definition of a 'religious freak'? I'm starting to think you all believe this term applies to anyone who holds that their beliefs are the true ones.

Further, I don't understand WHY people have this attitude towards those wandering JWs, Mormons, Baptists, etc. I invite them in every time they come. There is nothing I like more than debate. As a Catholic, I want to0 share my Faith with anyone who shows an interest in things eternal. Afterall, if you think about it, it's really the only topic (Is there a life after this? If so, how should we act now? etc... ) worth talking about for any great length.

President Bush just signed legislation into law to protect military funerals from protest and he didn't do it to protect our dead soldiers' families from "Godless atheists," he did it to protect them from Christian fundamentalists.

I was just reading on Drudge about another case of Christian terrorism here in America. It seems a group of Christians were "praying" outside a Florida porno shop, trying to prevent it from opening. Well, it opened anyways, and I guess one Christian didn't want to just leave it at that, so somebody attached some type of deadly chemical delivery device to the shop's air conditioner, contaminating the store and costing $30,000 in damage and cleanup costs. Local Florida authorities described it as a "weapon of mass destruction." Domestic terrorism, courtesy of a Bible Thumper.

Need to spread the "sheeps blood" around your door frame. That keeps both types away.

Mormans like guns so I am more partial to them. I have some good friends who are Mormans and they never push their religious values on me. At the church they sing the song of No Smoking, No Drinking, No Drugs, Etc. But around me they are asking for Cigars, Cigs, and Beer. They are so funny!!

    Here's a question for everyone:
    can anyone be truly athiest?

Granted there are many people that don't believe in one God (such as the Judeo-Christian God) but they must believe in SOMETHING beyond a doubt.
A lot of agnostics or whatever believe that scientific proof will show the truth, so they believe in science.
Communists believe in the communist utopia or whatever they call it, which (to me) involves as much blind faith as believing the 6000 year-old Earth idea.

So is there such a thing as a true athiest?

Quickdraw and Badwrench, I will be right over to aid in your conversion.

Fanatics of any stripe are the most dangerous people and institutional fanaticism such as the Spanish Inquisition or the Social Democrats of the Third Reich is even more dangerous.

Sorry guys, but as a Catholic I dont see anything wrong in those who are Athiests. The majority seem to just put up with their belief and leave the Christians alone to their way of thinking and cause no problems or trouble. Yes, a few exeptions, mainly for publicity sake.
Some other religions such as Islam is another story and one must be a
Islam believer or else. !!! Other "door to door" religious people trying to convert (enighten us) are easily sent on their way without
any problems and without any bad words. Probably we have several Atheists on board here and no problems. What one belives is what one belives in unless it gets to "more than just talk" and extermination of
    another religion for "religions sake".

I'm always amused when atheists protest any display of religion in government or public areas, especially during the holiday season.

In my opinion, if a person doesn't believe at all in a deity, why should it bother them?

I'm not pagan but I wouldn't demand that the owner of a building remove the gargoyles or Sol (sun) off of it. I truly don't care that a seafood restaurant has a picture or statue of Zeus in the dining area. I'm not going to ask FTD to take Mercury off of its logo or Columbia Pictures to remove the torch-carrying goddess from their logo either.
