I really want one of these, same gun without the paw prints would be perfect. Anybody have experiance with one of these 4"ers?

Recoil is a bit tough, but manageable due to the weight of the gun.
I liked shooting it, but it got old pretty quick!
The way I handle it mostly, is tie a small string around the barrel and step on it. It keeps the gun pointed in the proper general direction and not at the birds overhead.[;)]
Watching was plenty good enough for me. There's not much in Kansas that needs killing that bad.
Shoot one first before you spend the money. If your older the recoil from these hurts like hell. After shooting one I decided my 44 mag was enough.
But, but, but these have the muzzle brake/compensators. It'll be like shooting a .38 special [:D].

I own one. Bottom line if ya want to shoot it regularly you need to reload for it...factory ammo is BIG bucks...also the advantage of reloading the round is you can power it down...I like mine and run hot to mild loads thru it...full throttle loads...HANG on tight...ya wouldnt want 3 1/2 pounds hitting you in the forehead[;)]
at all.[xx(]
will stick with my anaconda 4"[^] or
my S&W 29 4"[:)]
PS What kind and model is that with the bear etching?

And the noise would be not unlike standing next to a howitzer.
Saved the 5th round for my ammo collection.
I have abosolutely no interest in owning one.

The gun store in Ennis has one of those, I'm pacing the flolor thinking about calling them and seeing if they will let me lay it away untill I get home in Dec [8D]
If the bills are paid and you have the bucks to blow you should go for it. Justification be damned.
It just might be fun!
Kodiakk, thats the S&W Backpacker

Thanks. I'm going to have look into one also. I love the foot prints and bear etching.
BTW, the guy who bought the .500 traded it in within a couple of months. Too much gun, and exspense.
I shoot a lot of big bore mainly in the form of TC Encores. I have a 375 JDJ and a 45-70 both 15" barrels and both ported. The 500 S&W kicks harder to me than my 45-70. That being said, it is hard to compare the two. An Encore is made completely different from the 500 S&W. And that 15" long by 1" round barrel on my Encore weights a good bit. I am now considering a 500 S&W barrel for my Encore, out of curiously more than anything else.
I have no doubt the 500 will kill anything on this continent. I shot a cardboard box full of newspapers with the 500. It made a .5" entrance hole and I could put my hand in the exit hole. That was 12" of tightly packed newspaper and we were shooting Cor-Bon JSPs

+1..The loads I make with H-110 and Lil' Gun are pussycats compared to factory ammo(especially Cor-Bon).
I watched interstatepawnllc buy a 500, then I watched him try reloading hot loads for it, then I watched him have big pain, then I watched him sell it.[:D]

Get that NFA trust and this would be cheaper to shoot and just as or maybe more so painful:

That with 3.5" slugs and you'll be close to the 500 for recoil
