I really want one of these, same gun without the paw prints would be perfect. Anybody have experiance with one of these 4"ers?

No experience but I want one also. I am sure recoil would be hell. Not a gun you would go to the range and put a couple hundred rounds thru.

Seen several 500s traded in over a few years, they almost always come with a box of ammo missing 3 to 5 rounds...

I have shot a cylinder full through one.
Recoil is a bit tough, but manageable due to the weight of the gun.

I liked shooting it, but it got old pretty quick!

The way I handle it mostly, is tie a small string around the barrel and step on it. It keeps the gun pointed in the proper general direction and not at the birds overhead.[;)]

To justify buying? Better do it while you still can. Good enough reason?

i've fired quite a few rounds with a 4" 500mag. The "wow" factor is the only reason I continue to do so. It is not pleasant by any stretch of the imagination. Probably similar to firing 2 30-06's at the same time. If you were able to do so with one hand... It won't knock you to the ground, but HOLD ON. Accurate rapid fire is something that will only exist while drinking and telling stories. Not possible in real life.

I watched interstatepawnllc buy a 500, then I watched him try reloading hot loads for it, then I watched him have big pain, then I watched him sell it.[:D]

Watching was plenty good enough for me. There's not much in Kansas that needs killing that bad.

Shoot one first before you spend the money. If your older the recoil from these hurts like hell. After shooting one I decided my 44 mag was enough.

But, but, but these have the muzzle brake/compensators. It'll be like shooting a .38 special [:D].

I own one. Bottom line if ya want to shoot it regularly you need to reload for it...factory ammo is BIG bucks...also the advantage of reloading the round is you can power it down...I like mine and run hot to mild loads thru it...full throttle loads...HANG on tight...ya wouldnt want 3 1/2 pounds hitting you in the forehead[;)]

I've been wanting one of them for years. Just can't get myself to take the plunge.

PS What kind and model is that with the bear etching?

If I wanted a cartridge that size I'd prefer it in a rifle. The 44 Mag is big enough handgun for me.

And the noise would be not unlike standing next to a howitzer.

Shot 4rds through the 6" standard one when they 1st came out.
Saved the 5th round for my ammo collection.

I have abosolutely no interest in owning one.

You should buy it if you want it.

If the bills are paid and you have the bucks to blow you should go for it. Justification be damned.

    It just might be fun!

I sold one to a feller who wanted it pretty bad. He let me shoot it, so I shot 5 rnds of full load. That was enough for me. I bought a .460. That was a nice revolver and I preferred it over the .500. More versatile since it will also shoot .45LC & .454 Casull, cheaper ammo, and a great deer gun.

BTW, the guy who bought the .500 traded it in within a couple of months. Too much gun, and exspense.

Had the opportunity to shot one this weekend with my son. I was using a shooting glove and it still hurt my hand. The recoil is straight back and punishes the web of your hand. My son and I put 50 rounds thru his. That was 50 Car-Bon full magnum rounds. Today my hand feels like it is bruised.

I shoot a lot of big bore mainly in the form of TC Encores. I have a 375 JDJ and a 45-70 both 15" barrels and both ported. The 500 S&W kicks harder to me than my 45-70. That being said, it is hard to compare the two. An Encore is made completely different from the 500 S&W. And that 15" long by 1" round barrel on my Encore weights a good bit. I am now considering a 500 S&W barrel for my Encore, out of curiously more than anything else.

I have no doubt the 500 will kill anything on this continent. I shot a cardboard box full of newspapers with the 500. It made a .5" entrance hole and I could put my hand in the exit hole. That was 12" of tightly packed newspaper and we were shooting Cor-Bon JSPs

Jerry Miculek recommends a lower than normal grip in his revolver videos. There's really not much you can do either way.

+1..The loads I make with H-110 and Lil' Gun are pussycats compared to factory ammo(especially Cor-Bon).

Cor Bon makes a 500 special load that is easier on the hand Ballistics are slightly superior to the .480 Ruger

Get that NFA trust and this would be cheaper to shoot and just as or maybe more so painful:

That with 3.5" slugs and you'll be close to the 500 for recoil

I just plain wouldn't justify it. Now a .460 XVR with an 8.3" barrel is a different story. That is perfectly justifiable.
