She got lost last nite......

My teenage (new driver) went to the movies last nite. I let her go further off than she ever has alone. She was meeting friends at a mall....the movie was a last minute thing. She called to see if I minded if she went and I said she could if she called me when it was over.....and came straight home. She called and we went over how to get back home.

Take 459....just the way you drove there back in the same direction....all the way to Trussville....then RIGHT onto 59 and you should recognize your exit and come home (when she gets to Trussville its all very familiar.)

It came time for her to just about be home when I got another call....

Coral...."I think I'm going the wrong way."

Me....."Its a straight shot back to Trussville....where are you now?"

Coral..."I see boats.....65 south....I think I remember the boats."

Me....."BOATS!!!....Where the heck are BOATS!...459...not 65..how are you on 65!"

Coral...."65 south....towards Montgomery.....right?"

Me....."NO!....NO....NO boats....MONTGOMERY...nooooo....Tuscaloosa if you are on 65.....HOW are you on 65?"

Coral...."You said to go from 459...toward Birmingham...and go toward Montgomery....now I'm on 65 south."

Me..."When!!!....You were supposed to go straight like you got to the mall....stay on 459...and you would have been in Trussville."

Coral...."The next exit says Jemmison."

Me...."I don't even know WHERE that is....get off and turn around."

*** we get off the phone, five minutes pass ***

I call her just to see if she is back on the freeway....

Me...."what do you see now?"

Coral...."I'm in the rest stop looking at a map."

Me...."WHAT!!!!...I don't want you out of your car in the middle of the night! Get back in the car and come 65 NORTH....can you find that?"

Coral....."K.....I'll call you when I get back on the road."

*** when I hang up with her I call her dad (who works nights) and ask him where is Jemison... He tells me WAY far away and tells me what he thinks she has done to get on 65 going the wrong way ***

Coral....calls back... "I see Birmingham is 40 miles away"

Me...."WOW! You think you can follow 65 south all the way home....Its not the same. You will go all the way through Birmingham and end up getting off the freeway in Hayden."

Coral....."I want to get off the freeway in Gardendale so I can stop at a gas station."

Me...."Do you need gas?"

Coral...."No...I just want to get out and get an energy drink."

Me...."Its TOOO LATE for an energy drink...and AGAIN I don't want you getting out of the car this late!"

Coral...."I'll call you when I get to Gardendale."

Me......"Dang it....don't stop anywhere!"

Coral...."I have to pee.....I'll get a Mountain Dew."

Me...."Don't talk to anyone and get a water....it'll do you more good than the other crap....get some cinnamon gum...it'll wake you up too."

She got home at TWO am.....she had a sweet tea and smelled of cinnamon gum. I cannot imagine how parents made it through this mess before cell phones!

Looks like someone is needing a GPS. Even if she will not listen to you, maybe she will listen to the ladies voice on the GPS.

I bet she ends up about that far away eventually. If she gets THAT far out I'll just see if I can find her a place to rent and let her come visit when she has more driving experience!

She has asked for a Tom Tom. She has a birthday coming up....the 9th of December. I told Larry she wanted a Tom Tom and he said...."she needs a map" I told him she would be trying to read it, texting, playing with the radio, and looking at herself in the rear view mirror. A tom tom may not be a bad idea.

I have never looked into GPS devices.... Is there a better one than the rest? I am guessing that there may be one on sale for the holidays. I may just stop in at Radio Shack tomorrow......Thank you Jacob!

she should know how to read a map.

that being said(and i can read a map), i wouldnt go anywhere without my tom tom.

they are about teh most user friendly model ive ever played with. other models have more features, but are more complicated and of course cost more.

the tom tom does have one feature you might be interested in(dont know if its offered elsewhere, just know it is with tt). you cant link the gps to a cell phone via bluetooth. theres an emergency button(well two. mechanical and medical/legal). push it and it calls either the cops or the tow truck. it also tells you where you are to relay.

I have a Radio Shack just down from the store.... I don't plan on getting out into the sale mess, but a Tom Tom sounds like a must have. I think she could have found her way using a map....but the "newness" of driving makes it so hard to figure out things. She is so funny.

I have the big Tom Tom, it works!

If you get 2 Tom Tom's you can program them to track her where abouts. 1 in her car and 1 at home.

Before I got laid off in the early '70's, I used to fly cargo to South America (Lansa Airlines). Old C-46/DC-6 types. I'm quite qualified for navigation of all types, and I occasionally rely on a magellan GPS that was given to me.

Get a GPS for the car. Keep it in the car. Joe

Good she made it home safe. Two other things I MAKE my two driving boys have - A cell phone charger that they keep plugged in their car and they never let their gas tanks go below 1/2... I have told them to tell me if they get to 1/2 and I will give them gas money.... In this situation having gas and a charged cell phone was worth its value... Great story to share - reminds me to check my boys tanks TODAY.... Tks ....

Also - In that area of B-Ham it is easy to get turned around especially the Summit and Hy65 and 31. We travel over that way about once a month for the wife to shop at the Galerria and I go over to The Gun Cellar and visit with Tom and the guys....

My vote is for the TomTom as well.I have had one a couple of years and I recently got one for my son.You can find one for less than $100 now if you look around online.I like the fact I can change the voices if I like and have added Dennis Hopper and John Cleese for some amusement.Susie and I can find the antique shops and auctions much easier now, just put in the address and it takes us right to them.[:)]

I stopped on the way home tonite....Best Buy. The sales guys all looked like they had been dragged behind a team of mules, showered off and not fed so much as a cracker throughout the day. Each one had a smile on his face....but a "dead" look in their eye. I can only imagine what the day was like for them.

I picked up a Tom Tom....only because it was $99. The others were all at least $100 more and the features were not all that different. If she uses it a lot I may get a better one for her later. Right now I just want her to remember to lock the doors and put it away....I'm guessing it gets stolen within the next month or two. After she learns a few "lessons" on why we put our stuff out of site and lock our doors it may not be such a bad idea to spend more on the better model.

Her birthday is Dec 9th.....17!!! WOW....its going by sooo fast.

Sure is a great picture! Enjoy the heck out of the next year or three, cause she is just about ready to fly off.

Make sure to remind her that the First, most important duty to herself is to LOOK OUT THE FRONT WINDOW. The doodad on the dash telling her to turn left can't decide for her whether it is safe to do so. A few years ago I set up a GPS system for my daughter. I made sure to get a unit that I could hook up to the stereo, so that she wouldn't have to look at it. It makes her shut off the music and listen to the verbal directions. Two in-the-cockpit distractions eliminated.

Getting lost, while it can be scary and these days dangerous, is IMO just part of lifes experiences that we learn from.
We start in life traveling very close to home. And then gradually expand our travels in ever widening circles.
I remember getting lost in Houston as a teen. And can't begin to count the times I got lost in various cities while trucking. But each time I leaned something and did better the next time.
As someone stated, in addition to the Tom Tom, I would get her an atlas or at least a local map. And make sure she knows how to use it. Proper pre-route planning when going into unfamiliar places is very valueable.

We use the Sprint cell phone locator on the Internet it's only a few dollars extra a month, and show sorta accurate maps of current and past locations with timestamps and stuff... But I would recommend telling her about it, instead of doing it in secret.

Glad your daughter is home safe. One of my friends in a not horribly dis-similar situation in which she needed help while on the road didn't come back safe a while back. She had actually been on the cell phone while with her abductor and it didn't matter at all. Her funeral was closed casket, I'm sure you can fill in the blanks

I vote for a Garmin Nuvi also, I got the cheap Nuvi 200 for about $150 last winter. I drove from South Dakota to Florida and back this summer without ever looking at a map once. It really saved me when I had to drive through traffic in Atlanta and Nashville, and didn't have to look at a map to find what exits I needed to be taking. I've heard the Garmins are a little easier to use than the TomTom also.

    You got hustled.

    Hook line and sinker.

The sweet tea and cinnamon gum were brilliant props on her part.

Oh and in return for biting on her teenage hustle, you bought her a new toy.

    Well done.

I bet she CAN READ A MAP, and figured out an easy way to buy herself a few more hours while on a date.

I would also recommend Garmin. I just updated all my GPSs. I got rid of the old Magellan and Garmin. Bought refurbished Garmin 750. A little over $100.

The new chipsets are really getting better and faster.
