Hey folks,
I went out for a bit this morning for a walk about/deer hunt. (Two birds, one stone type of thing)
I found were some trespassers have cut trails into the property and I'll deal with that on Monday, but I digress.
I jumped a doe and she stopped about 60 or so feet from me, but I had an 06 with me and I choose not to take the shot.
I may have if I would have had a shotgun with me, which gets me to my need for help and or opinions.
I am wanting to go back this afternoon and take a pump shotgun.
I have a mossberg pump with choke tubes in full, mod, ip cyl and a turkey.
I have turkey fiber optic sights on it that I would rather not take off.
I have some No. 4 Bucks and I have some 00 bucks.
The 00 bucks are 1 and 1/4oz shells and the 4's are just a little bit bigger. (They don't tell you but the brass is about 1/8" bigger on the 4s.
It is kind of windy, so I would think I may be able to jump something if I walk into the wind.
Looking for what to use for choke tube and shells.
Thanks,
DSM

You're lucky -- wish I could get out today, or at least had some land to get out to.

Anyhow, I'd go with the modified choke. Full is good, but my Mossberg's full choke shoots really tight -- tighter than I'd want for what you're doing. Either 00 or 4 Buckshot should be fine. I prefer 4 for walking, but that's just my personal preference. Both will get the job done.

    Good luck.

O95 here.. Number 4 shot is too small for deer, USE the 00 Buck, and modified choke.. ...

Personally, I would use the Improved cylinder and rifled slugs, NOT buckshot.

Buckshot, IMO is a meat destroyer. Are you after meat, or you just wanna kill deer?

Why use the shotgun at all? Take the rifle.

I do not have slugs at the moment, but yes, I am after meat.
    Thanks

make sure buckshot is legal in your state , some states like here in WI don't allow it

I do not have enough shooting lanes for the rifle and I am planning on walking into the wind and see if I can jump something.
I had to pass on this mornings shot because of houses behind the deer.
If I would have had a shotgun this morning I would have taken the shot.
    Thanks.

I'm heading out as soon as the Saints/TB game is over.

Slugs, slugs, slugs, practice, practice, practice. 0 to 100 yards. Improved cylinder or modified for slugs. Go get er! I would have shot the 06 at the 60 feet for sure. Why not???????

Don't sweat all this rifle and slug talk. Buckshot is what you've got, and is perfectly fine. No need to make a whole ordeal of it, right? Just grab your shotgun and go for a walk. If you do want a little added range, go with the 00. If it's thick and everything's close up, the 4 is just fine (despite what others say). Have killed many deer with 4 Buck without any trouble.

Houses! ok I understand. If real close then the 00 buck may be the right thing even opposed to the slugs. Those slugs go a far piece!

You can be sure that if that doe would have stopped on the south side of me I would have shot.
Killing one of the neighbors is not on my list of things to do, even if they are trespassing. [;)]
I was sitting in a lane this morning, but nothing walked out.[:(]
I walked the boundary and found the tresspasser path and was walking out when I jumped the doe.

At least you are smart enough to be aware of where your bullet could end up...

That said, one more vote for 00 buck, but I'd probably lean towards firing off a shot iwth each choke to see how they pattern ... then pick appropriately.

depending on how your gun shoots. i would go with 00 buck also. next choice would be a #1 buckshot i have hit and killed deer at 90 to100 feet with 00buck also would try it with full or mod choke before making that choice

Seems everybody on the planet thinks it's for anti-personnel use, but there IS a reason it's called "buckshot". The 00 would be my choice in your sit. BTW the length of the brass doesn't mean a thing with modern loads.

Also, if I were you I'd put up some signs.

My favorite one was used on a road, but you could change the wording:

    PRIVATE ROAD

    MINED

When the Sheriff came gingerly stepping up on the edge of the road to see what the property owner's story was, the owner said it was a typo and he actually meant MIND, like when his grandma used to say "Mind your manners."

Did not see anything this time, but I did see a bunch of signs.
It was very windy and I hunted in an area that I do not go in.
I am going to try and make an early morning walk through in that area this week.

I have signs posted, but I am going to add a lot more, maybe a couple of dozen. Then I will start patrolling the area that they are coming in on. Once I catch them I will call the sherif.
