Selling old guns that came from your father

I was talking with a friend during supper at the gun club meeting last night and he mentioned that he has a number of old long guns that he inherited from his father.

He was asking, if he can just sell them? [?]

Or does he have to go through a dealer? [?]

We are in Massachusetts. I'm kind of new here, and I know there are tons of regulations here.

Do you have to go through the police? [?]

Is is different if the buyer is in MA? [?]

Is is different if the buyer is outside of MA? [?]

(After moving down from Canada to the land of the free, I sold a couple long guns when I moved here. I just boxed them up real good put them in the UPS system (telling them what was in the box) and sent them to the buyers. I had started the paper work while still in Canada ... whoa, was that ever a mess of red tape! I gave up and just waited. I waited until I got here and did as I said. Should I have gone through a dealer? [?] I am a citizen on the USA and of Canada. I want to know for next time I have something to sell and what advice I should give to my friend at the club. [?] )

Yes he can, if he has the appropriate license to possess them, and the recipient does as well.

No. Face-to-face sales between individuals are legal in MA.

Join GOAL, they are the MA-state gun lobby. . .and worth the price of membership. They can also probably help you with these sorts of questions.
