Century Arms R1A1 Sporter?

edited May 2006 in General Discussion
I recently purchase a Century Arms R1A1 sporter and have a few questions I need answered.
1. what type of aftermarket magazines will fit this gun?
2. on the safety selector, it has a S, R, and A. I assume S stands for Safe and R is for Repetition, but what does the A stand for and what does it do?
3. On the front sight, there is a thing that hinges up that has marking for 50, 75, and 100. On the side it says meters. It is so big, I know I wouldn't flip it up for 50, 75, 100 meter shooting ranges. The bullet would hit the ground within 50 feet if i shot on the 100 meter reading. What is this used for?
Any answers to these questions would ge greatly appericated. Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by metric mags. What should I type in to find these? Sportsman's Guide has 0 results when I type in R1A1 or century. What other guns use the same mags?

Try searching for FAL/L1A1 not Century/R1A1. Century just made the receiver. They then took a FAL (metric) or L1A1 (inch) parts kit, added their receiver and called it a R1A1. The metric mags usually will fit either inch or metric receivers, but not the other way around. I used metric in mine as they were cheaper to buy than inch ones. Here is a link to some factory metric mags for sale:

Also, check out this site. Everything you ever wanted to know about the FAL/L1A1, and then some:

Thanks to all who helped me. I feel smarter now. Anyone else ever buy a gun on a whim and when you got home wandered just exactly what you bought? Thanks again, Mike.

You want metric (not inch) FAL mags for extras. Check your US made parts for 922(r) compliance.

If it is brand new, you'll want to lube it before shooting - they are shipped "dry". You'll also need to adjust the gas system the first time you take it out shooting.

Read up on the Adjustable Gas Ring. Nice rifle[8D] Mags are pretty reasonable right now to. I had one of their L1A1's and found it to be a powerful assult rifle. The finish on the lower was awful though. It did'nt like the cheap surplus Indian .308. Although it may have been a gas valve adjustment issue. It's user adjustable near the front sights.

mrseatle - the old Indian ammo (from the early/mid 70s) is good stuff... the 80s, 90s, and 2000 production stuff has a nasty tar on it to seal it. Really gunks things up.

Right now best surplus ammo is probably the south African stuff in sealed battle packs...

Great gun! I have one that is metric. One heck of a lot more power than a 5.56! If you look around there are some 30 round mags available for $45 to $60. Have the barrel shortened to 16 inches and ream out the gas port and then put on a folding stock kit. Makes one badazz little rifle.

I may have been messing with the gas adjustment too much. Got to find setting for diff. loads. I still got the 70's Indian. I'll give it another try. thanks for info on S African. I shot a battle pack of the .223 with good results. price is good too.
