You are not the first to tell me that Don. Being right does not mean a lot to me, I have been wrong about many things, not putting out wrong information about snakes does interest me, and there is a lot of shooting from the hip on snakes.
incase anyone missed it the first time, i've had a run in with them about 20 times, very hard to tell what they are in different lighting their color changes slightly, i thought the first one was a copperhead till i killed it, they used to visit my pond

For what it is worth, since reading your post here about snakes, I no longer kill every snake that I see. I even let a 5 foot white oak runner live today! Don
That is a name I have never run into before Don, I would guess it is one of the racers? Good man, they will help keep the chipmunks out of your pecans.
My pal Kimi sent me the photo and on this computer I can see the original It is indeed the Western fox snake, and probably the most beautiful example I have ever seen. They feed largely on rodents, but will take the occasional bird. They are not that commonly seen and not commonly kept by snake fanciers. Their distribution is way north compared to most of the species of rat snake. Some now consider them, based on DNA, to be in the genus Pituophis, which would place them with the gopher rather than the rat snakes. I am inclined to doubt that based on morphology, but I have no DNA evidence. I worked with the Northern fox snake back in the 70's but never secceded in reproducing them.

Notice the similarity in color of the head and body and the markings?
After looking at all those websites on snakes I'd have to say it looks most like a Western Fox Snake.

That was my first impression, too, once I saw He Dog's post on the Western Fox.
Some have rattles, some don't.
That's what would have happen at my house, if I had seen it.
