JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!

quamnetquamnet Member Posts: 332 ✭✭
edited March 2008 in General Discussion
I have been noticing lately, more than ever that a lot of people on this board are saying a lot more than is necessary......

I see a lot of posts where people are asking regular harmless gun related questions and a lot of answers are quite more in depth and emotional than needed. I feel if someone asks a question, you can answer it and add a gun-related opinion to it. Do not go and throw your personal opinions about something totally irrelavent and unrelated to the question in there, especially if it could be offensive. Now I understand this is a forum where people talk back and forth, willingly accepting to read what others write. But I do feel if someone asks a simple question, politely, they deserve a polite response back. That's just my opinion though......

I agree with you, however, you'd better get used to the way things are or you'll go nuts. The only thing that gets me is if someone has a perfectly good question, but is treated as a dummy for asking. Too many know-it-alls that haven't the patience to answere humbley!

I agree with you that this happens. Sometimes to excess. Did you notice the title for this forum is "General DISCUSSION" and just about anything that is not too extreme is generally allowed, and more or less acceptable. Specific questions about guns are posted on the other forum, for the most part.

If I knew then, what I know now.

You are right about one thing:

"...this is a forum where people talk back and forth, willingly accepting to read what others write."

Beyond that, who the hell are you to decide when "answers are quite more in depth and emotional than needed"?

greetings, just let me say this, people approach problem and answers to problems differently. like wise the way people express that method differs greatly. we call that variety. like the apostole paul said" i lay the foundation, another builds the substructure, and one more builds the house."(my paraphase) this unique system within all of us is what makes life interresting. respt submitted dads-freehold

I notice that you just stated your opinion and did not ask any question. Was this "necessary"?

I think its an important issue ... why add emotion to your answer?

We'er just sitting here interacting with this peice of technology instead of family, friends and neighbors ... we should become just as cold and inhuman as the machines we use ... ... just answer the question!

Answer this question yes or no: Have you stopped beating your wife?

As you can see, it is not always possible to "just answer the question." Often it is advisable to do more than just answer the question yes or no.

I am often disappointed when people "just answer the question" and do not explain the answer. For instance, if someone asks "What is the best carry gun?" and does not explain the answer given, no real knowledge is gained.

I am one of those who always tries to give a complete answer because I think that is important. If I cannot back up my answer with an explanation, I usually do not answer at all. If that offends you, I apologize, but do not intend to change the way I enjoy these boards.

Some times a "dig" is not neccisarily needed... Oppinions are like *-holes everyone has one they just don't need to show it off!

I have talked to a couple of my freinds that used to frequent this board more than now and they pretty-much told me the same thing, they thought this board has too much flaming over little stuff.

I still like this board and most of the controversy. Plus most of the different views, just not the bull-* flames that are un-called for.

If I wanted to argue with someone I'd get off this thing and talk money or religion with the little misses. She always has something to say about my downfalls in life!

I agree with Judge Colt, an explanation is usually necessary.
Do you punish your children with out giving them an a reason why!
Do you not try to teach them by relating past experiences and then letting them decide what is right and wrong.
We learn by asking, and yes I agree sometimes we get more than we asked for but isn't that what makes the world go round!!!
All in all this is a good site and I for one enjoy it and plan on staying here!! Hope you don't mind!!!! Pa.

I didn't know that this was a big problem. I enjoy 99% of the comments and answers posted. It's human nature to come up with smartass answers sometimes, but I contribute that to someones lack of knowledge on the subject and their inability to just keep quiet. It boils down to, if you don't like the thread, MOVE ON!

I thought that was why it is called General Discussion. If I want a one sentence answer to a question I can usually find it in a book or magazine. I like to hear other peoples ideas, feelings, and opinions toward a question. You can try Ask The Experts. They usually lock a post after 10 responses.

I always love these type of threads. You know, when someone takes it upon themself to tell others how they should post answers and responses. I cant imagine why anyone would think that there is a right way of posting. Pretty self centered, dont you think?

I tend to be long-winded, I suppose, but I'm not holding a gun to your head, nor is anyone else. I skip reading many threads and replies, some because of the identity of the writer. No reason why you cannot do the same. Sure, some replies are impolite, rude - ignorant, even. But most folks can deal with that; it's no different than in the rest of society. See, that was a polite response.

I had no idea this topic was going to get so much feedback.....after reading through the posts though I did notice one thing that kept being misunderstood. In my original post I said very clearly that I was referring to those replies that were "totally irrelavent and unrelated to the question, that could be offensive". I completely understand that this is a forum and peoples opinions are welcome. That is what it is all about. But those that have nothing to do with the topic and are offensive should just be left out.....end of discussion. And lowrider, about only being a junior member, I may not have a thousand posts myself, but I wish they had a number for how many of these posts I've read. Sometimes you get a lot more out of observing then taking part in a conversation yourself....

Hey Law: That's real cute. One thing I've noticed about you is that you seem to bring up homosexuality in nearly every one of your posts. My guess is you are full of repressed homosexual tendencies. Probably a result of your mom giving you baths 'till you were a senior in high school. Assuming you went to high school.

It always tickles me to hear some douchebag run his mouth while insulated by a thousand miles of telephone line. I absolutely guarantee you that were we standing face-to-face you wouldn't have one wise-* thing to say.

quamnet, if you don't like what you read, don't read it. If you feel you have to post, post a reply. I'm glad you stated your opinions here. I am most likely, one of the subjects of you post. I can see your viewpoint. You are not running this board, and have to live by the rules here. I find it more interesting reading, with a hit on someone deserving of it. Keep posting, and you will find out what I mean :>

I have been the instrument of this very topic on more than a few occasions. For me personally I like to see people give good suggestions, share personal experience and to watch people firmly stand by their opinions and beliefs.Im sure its not going to change so if you like this board its something to get used to.Even if it is not directly about the posted question it could be another topic sprouted up in the middle of that topic, somebody sharing an expeience, somebody wanting to piss somebody else off oe what have you.It makes the board diverse and interesting.
