On May 12, 2008 a 98 year old lady named Irena Sendlerowa passed away in Warsaw, Poland.

Her life was one of testimony, courage, love, and respect for all people regardless of race, religion, or creed.

During WWII, Irena, asked for permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.

She had an ulterior motive... She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German).

Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried.

Larger kids were smuggled out in the back of her truck in a Burlap sack.

She also had a dog in the back, that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in, and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids and infants.

She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, and arms, and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out, and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.

After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived, in order to reunite the children with their families.

Most of the parents had been gassed.

She helped those children that she could not reunite with their families get adopted or placed into foster family homes.

Irena was nominated for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize....

She LOST.

Al Gore won, for doing a slide show on Global Warming.

That's pretty crappy....He wins the Nobel Prize but can't even win his home state of Tennessee in the 2000 election.

    Irena, hands down.

I just wonder why she wasn't nominated until 2008, more than 50 years after Germany's surrender?

Israel named her as Righteous Among The Nations back in 1982(?), which many consider to be the highest award the Jewish State can offer to a non citizen. It is well worth noting that over 6,000 Poles have been granted the title of Righteous Among The Nations, while only 3 Americans have been so honored.

quote:Her life was one of testimony, courage, love, and respect for all people regardless of race, religion, or creed. That's a bit disingenuous to say since I'm sure she didn't exactly show any love or respect to the Nazis...

It's a niggling detail, but it's the truth.

As for losing out to Al Gore, hey, he also beat out the guy who founded the Crips.

Ya win some, ya lose some. It all evens out in the end.

Besides, I'm sure some liberal Hollywood type will make a movie about her, people will cry in the theaters, it'll make a few hundred million bucks, win an Oscar or ten, and she'll be forever immortalized in film as the person Charlize Theron played what saved all them kids in Warsaw.
