I didn't see this posted before, so I apologize if this has already been discussed. It's a new Blackhawk in 44 Special on a 357 frame. Pretty cool, even though I don't much care for Ruger revolvers. Kind of pricey, though, but I might get one for my FIL since he likes them.

Stupid question: can 44 Special ammo be fired from a 44 Magnum pistol, just like 38 Special from a 357 Magnum? Of is that a completely different thing?

The OM Blackhawks had soft frames. I've handled 357s that had been shot a lot and were very loose. I wouldn't do the conversion unless the frame were hardened or I'd use a new production gun.
I've seen a 41 Mag OM with Stainless grip frame that looked very pretty. When I decided to buy it, it was gone.
Ruger outright lied when they said these early frames were heat treated.
If you have an old one you want to do a lot of shooting with, find a shop with a Rockwell Hardness tester and test the frame under the grip frame where it wont show.
If you get B99 or lower the frame is dead soft. You should be on the "C" scale between C20 and C40.
If you decide to convert and harden an OM frame, it has to be in a Nitrogen or inert gas environment or oxides and Carbides will form that can't be removed from holes in the frame. I found out the hard way in the late '50s and kept the remains in a cigar box for 25 years or so.
When Ruger lost an "accidental" shooting case and had to incorporate a safety in their single actions, I called and told them my story. They were anxious to convert all the OM's.
They took the box of parts back and sent me a NM 44 Mag Super Blackhawk.
To make good after all those years makes good press.
However, I liked the size and feel of the OM 44 Mag Blackhawk and sold the NM.
The remake in 44sp is very appealing. I'd be hard put to make a decision between the 4 3/4" and 5 1/2" barrels.
    My original 44Mag Blackhawk had a 6 1'2" barrel and cost $65.
It outshot a good man with an 03 Springfield in a rock quarry.
Given the small grip frame, I downloaded using 20 gr 2400 and a 235 gr Keith GCHP. and it was pleasant to shoot.

Neat the Ruger kept it a "Six shooter", what with the small frame and all.

Also nice to see at least one barrel length mimic the Colt SAA (5.5").

Lipsey's is right down the road from my house. Family has a long history of firearm sales in the BR area. They are a wholesaler/distributer only.
I like that gun. Don't have much use for it, but I don't have much use for 95% of the guns I have.
