If I were in charge of setting the schedule for these I would check into what was going on before planning to have a gun show. The past few shows have been on the WORST possible days.....

The opening day of hunting season....where do you think the gun people will be on that day?

The Alabama vs Auburn football game day.....where is dang near EVERYONE on that day?

Not at the gun show.

We don't have them on those days in the southern part of the state. Don't have them Christmas or Mardi Gras either. [:o)][:D]

From what i can tell, some promotors do many shows, some in several states, and one every weekend. You can bet they've figured in, which is the best city to be in for any given weekend..if not, they should..

Seems like they run in cycles here in the Tampa area. One last week in Lakeland one next week in Tampa. Then months before another one. To answer your question, the promoter would take his list of dates to the venues and see what was available. many of these places are busy during the Holidays so the promoter may have to take what is available. I'm sure the group with the highest rate gets the best dates.

Tell me about it Kasey! We had one show during Cow Elk Rifle season...the absolute worst time of the year to have one. The next show we had was on the same weekend as Cabella's grand opening. There was only a handfull of folks at the first show...

Around here the dates were set many years ago. The space had to be reserved and it was a scramble to compete with the flea market, car, boat, RV, horse etc shows. I can hardly belive that they still let us have them! In the old days there were displays of like a 100 colts, dozens of Winchesters, extensive cartridge collections, not any more. The any knife on the blue table is $10 have taken over along with the china stuff. I still go as where else can you spend several hours for five bucks. I try and buy my cleaning supplies and other small items from the regular dealers.

I just can't see WHY they don't plan these better around here. If it were my thing to plan....I would be looking at the season more than anything. Everyone knows that the weekend before hunting season is primo time for any type of show and nobody plans anything at all during the major football games (except a few guys in charge of gun shows around here.)

There are two major shows around here, the Earnie Bean gun and knife show and the Alabama gun collectors show. It means we have a gun show every three months. Both are VERY dissapointing lately. They have overpriced guns and they have WAY too many "regulars" in charge of things.

My father used to do gun shows when I was younger...he was into the Alabama gun collectors pretty hard for a while, but got tired of the politics of it all. It used to be the people who came and set up the tables for the event got the tables they wanted as a reward, but someone decided the "best but kissers" should be in those spots. He quit going. Whenever I do go to a show I rapidly dart to the back and that way I don't have to mess with the "higher-ups" until I am completely sick and tired (so they get me at my VERY best.)

It just makes me sick to walk past those first few guys with anything at all with me and hear them say "whatcha got there?" Since I have an FFL now I don't get to do any trades or selling at the shows. I never ever go anymore. They seem to plan them so poorly I think I could have a yardsale that was a bigger hit than them.

What they should have is one "outdoor lovers" show with BIGGER people....actual representatives from Smith and Wesson, Remington, Glock, HK and all there. Not so much to "sell" but to have a real SHOW and not a bunch of nut jobs all trying to sell Winchester 97s for $1,000. and dinked up bayonets for collector's prices when they are crapola that have been welded into shape.

LF why don't you plan and organize and run your own event? that way YOU would be in complete control, give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Sometimes you just take what's available. Gun show promotors often have many shows during the year, and must schedule them far in advance, and then they also have to coordinate that schedule with the availability of the desired venue.

Start promoting your own show! Around here it seems there's one within driving distance almost every weekend.

I quit going all together to gun shows. I got tired of paying 10 bucks to get into a show where all I found was insanely overpriced junk. The last 3 times I went I did not buy a single thing, and was not even tempted. I was looking for a marlin 336 in .35 rem. The best priced one i found was 600 bucks and it was beat to hell. I can buy a new one for less than they wanted for a beater.

I think gun shows may be going the same way antique shows have. At the present time, there are many venues (such as the internet) to research and buy those types of items without even leaving the house. I also think Locust Fork hit the nail on the head in regard to overpriced junk. The last gun show I went in Boise was a joke; overpriced items, tons of Chinese knives, swords and other "tactical" junk that you wouldn't even dream of bringing home at any price.

Tactical= reason to charge twice as much for an item that is identical to the "non-tactical" version of the same exact item.

Yup. They schedule them on religous holidays around here......opening of squirrel season, LSU-Florida game, and opening of deer / duck season.
Somebody has their head up their behind.
