New to me. The bore looks like it's never been fired.

Well some are going to have a fit of my way of removing the cosmoline.

Take the gun apart, and put it in "gasoline " yes gasoline brush it off with an old tooth brush or whatever you have and it comes off quick and clean. Let it dry then clean the normal way with oil and it is ready to go. " Do Not " use this method on the wood.

i think you did very well.
looks like one of the packages mitchell used to sell (for a lot more).
gasoline is not such a crazy idea to take off cosmoline. i use a cheap natural hair paintbrush, with the bristles cut to 1" length or an actual parts brush and just brush the gas on and scrub a little. a couple shots of gunscrubber will neutralize the gasoline, then just apply a good gun oil.
    great guns!

Now, why in the heck can this be imported, whereby other surplus military arms
    can not be imported?

    Silly laws.

I think I'm going to buy a bottle of 'law repellant'.
Law repellant that's been aged for over twelve years!

Doofus American, benign public. We have a law-set that
effectively tells us we can do anything..but we are
    choosing to ignore it.

Very nice! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do my 1943. I fired mine today. I managed a 2" 5 shot group, and another just under 2" using surplus "light ball" ammo at 100 yards. ..I love that rifle [:D]

My "law repellant" was made in 1925...so it's been aging for roughly 86 years.

    its an oiler/cleaning solution container.
i can't see the markings on yours, but the side that has a w looking letter is for cleaner, the other for oil

Not my cuppa, never had much interest in mil-surps, but it looks like you could have a nice afternoon with that one, and at an enviable price.

One is a "W" type character, the other is an "H," if memory serves. I already put it away for the day.

yeah, "h" should be on the right side. that's for oil.
the original gun cleaner supplied was HIGHLY toxic and no longer available.

    have fun with it!

I spent 2 hours after I posted this thread cleaning cosmoline. That is some nasty stuff, and the Russians seem to have heaps and gobs of it, because that's what was on and in the rifle.

ZZ-l was going to suggest you remove the Barreled Action from the stock so as not to discolor the Turkish Walnut or nick the 24 LPI checkering while cleaning. l really like the HARPOON. l hear there are quite a few Beached whales in ID [:0]

    NICE gun [;)]

I really like both my "hex" 91/30 and M44. Some folks hate the recoil on them but for some reason I just can't get enough of it. I also always enjoy the flame from the barrel of the M44. [^]

Good score and enjoy the new toy! [8D]

Just had a thought about the cosmoline removal...what if you placed the rifle in a hot car on a rack above something that would catch all the droppings? Of course...it might make the car smell funky, but I personally might like the smell of an old military surplus rifle in my ride. [:D][;)][8D]

That is some nasty stuff, and the Russians seem to have heaps and gobs of it, because that's what was on and in the rifle.nah. they don't have a lot of it. they only have 1 big jar. it was toe cheese from women tractor factory workers in Smegminsk collected during the winter of 1837. they discovered its preservative properties when one of the ladies put some ball bearings between her toes to keep them warm (the ball bearings) and they discovered they simply would not rust. they tried it on a wooden tractor seat, that didn't rust either so a representative from Moscow had them walk around in a vat and collect toe cheese. it wasn't adding up to much before they started wearing stockings in their boots so that was the end of it. they only got 5 buckets but it was very powerful stuff, they figured out they could mix it with lard to stretch it out. a 1/1000 ratio lasts a long time and they finally ran out about 1958.
