*I intended for this to be in General Discussion*

There's a range near my house I was looking into joining. I just went to their website and the number 1 rule is "No human silhouette targets". Is this common with most ranges? I've surely never heard of this before.

It is not common, but it is not unheard of in Liberal areas which have not found a way to cut out shooting altogether.
IPSC has the "Classic" target, sometimes called the "amoeba" for use in such jurisdictions.

Note that the NRA does not offer shooting events for American Commoners to shoot at humanoid targets.

I think the proposals are for just the silhouette targets 'wearing' sombreros and/or 'eating' fried chicken and watermelon ... or, in fact, of course, any dragging crosses.

Yes...at the county owned public ranges in So. FL.
One is in Miami-Dade Co., the other in Broward.
Sillhouette targets, including the ones with Sadam, Obama and assorted bad guys are banned.

Wow, I just have never even thought about those type of problems that you folks up north or in the blue areas of the United States have to go through. This is the United States, right? Come to Texas, and I will let you shoot cans, bottles, or even targets. If we make a mess, we got to clean it up though. Yea, I'm getting green I guess. The whole think seems pretty silly to me.

I went through boot camp with a boy from Florida. He was one of the reddest rednecks I ever met. Redder than mine even. I mentioned one day that I thought there were more Yankees in Florida than New York City. Almost had a fight on my hands. [:D]

I have been told at a local range, that in the state of California it is a CRIME to shoot sillhoutte targets. seems rediculous to me. California is a world away to me. Never been there. Probably never go. Here we shoot at pictures of people posing as bad guys let alone sillhouttes.

What will I do with all the copies of the pictures of my mother in law? That is the only reason that I go shooting anymore!

The club range here in WA has a rule: No FULLSIZE silhouette targets, because of the angles at closer ranges, the shooter might elevate the muzzle (Especially if the shooter is short) and have rounds escape the range. Halfsize and smaller are allowed.

The restriction is about safety, not "Human Silhouette".

Aren't they illegal in some New England state, such as Vermont or New Hampshire? Here in Wyoming, we use Californians. Like prairie rats, there are plenty of them, and they breed rapidly.

I have heard of it before but it is not common. Pretty much P.C. bull crap. Luckily it has not happened around me.

I have been on a couple of ranges in Illinois that do not allow human or animal targets.

The one range around here will let you shoot at bin laden targets. I don't think NRA lets you use any silhouettes.

When I bought my Rock Island 1911 last week, I got a free session at the stores indoor range. (1st time I had ever been to one). The target they supplied was a Arabic Terrorist.

My range, restriction is paper target, MUST hit backing or move to shorter range, and no full auto fire before 10am. However, if PC has overtaken your range, try this. You know the peel off targets? They come with "pasters" to extend the life of the target, 4 per pack. On a blank cardboard backer, place 2 dots horizontally in the upper fourth, centered, but about 4 inches apart. a foot below, place 4 dots vertically, centered, about 4 inches apart. You now have a head shot and "center body mass" shot- consisting only of 6 black circles. See if they can complain about that.

one indoor range I go to in Kent has all kinds of human targets in ALL races/colors-no discrimination there--when I lived in Fresno the indoor range there stopped having the human targets after a complaint was lodged[xx(]

It's a free country, and I would never tell anybody what images they couldn't print on their targets.

But me, I can't make myself shoot at pictures of people. A generalized silhouette I could possibly do, but that photograph of Jane Fonda with a target superimposed on it just makes me shudder to think about shooting at it. I think a drawing would affect me the same way.

Okay, call me a wimp. I can take it.

it might be unsavory, but that's what defensive shooting practice is all about. people are allowed to use guns to protect themselves, and one necessity is to practice on a realistic target. there has never been a report of a floating black circle 100 yards away trying to kill someone.
