It's a shame to see this Bel Air smashed up but here is a controlled crash between a 1959 Bel Air and a 2009 Malibu, results are not what we thought!

On that one pic you could see the air rust pouring out of the 59.

had nice shiny paint on it. belongs in a car show somewhere. why couldn't they use an old piece of junk to smash up [:(]

There is no way there was enough rust damage to change the results.

Face it folks, cars are much safer now than they used to be.

If you watch close it looks like a lot of dirt coming out of it, guess it wasn't detailed before killing it. As far as the chassis being rusted to the point of being a cardboard box for effect I don't think so. Yep, it's an old car but look at the after pics and you will see aged but not rusted out metal. The rockers didn't give out and if it was a rust bucket those rockers would have fell apart.

I agree, I thought for sure the crash dummy would have "walked away" from that but he looks like he died in that crash, or at least wishes he had died!

after extensive testing the NIHS has determined that fuzzy dice are pretty much safe from getting damaged in a car wreck.

What they did not show was the new car test dummy being decapitated by the shrapnel from a Takata air bag [:o)]

been a volunteer fireman for the better part of 32 years .Over that time have lost count of the wrecks I have worked .When I started there were quite a few 60s and 70s model cars still on the road Crashes were much worse then .People survive stuff that 20 or 30 years ago would have killed them .They may get injured but they live

not to be a party pooper but look at the billions of dollars spent to make the cars safer since the 59 chevy . sure it was heavy steel but just like the gas millage I would be totally disappointed if with all the computers and engineers know how we have . I would hope that a 20k to 30k car would do a whole lot better than a 2,500 dollar car in any comparisons ( except style any way )
people live thru a lot of nasty wrecks just not eating a steel dash and having a steering Colum impale you would be a big improvement[:D]
with that said I would take a showroom condition 59 over any 09 Malibu any day of the week as my car

the rear view mirror used to be a big problem. steel hook bolted to the roof, snags your head. changed to a plastic break-off stalk. that was a good idea.
