Kitten Food

All right guys, don't even start! I can be a real hero here with my wife if I can get this abandond kitten some food. It's small but walks (not too stable) and meeows a bunch. I think a fox or other critter got the mom. Can I feed it human baby milk substitute stuff? It's been almost 40 years since I have bought that so I don't remember the brand names.

Thanks foks,
It's too late for me, save yourself.

Probably, although I don't know if it will survive on it. Call a vet, or go to a good pet store if you have one and see if you can get milk replacer like you can for calves. Good luck.

The product you want is called Esbilac. Certainly available from veterinarians, and probably from Pet Smart and such. I assume saying you want the feline formulation is unnecessary, so I won't.

If its an emergency (no stores open) then you can give it some warmed up can milk diluted a bit with whole milk...

Dawnie says kitten formula is available at Wal*Mart or any pet store. The bottles are available there too, or at the vet's office.

Try the kitty on soft canned cat food, maybe mixed with formula if it has its teeth.

Dawnie has a cat, Simba, that she hand raised from a tiny kitten, only a few days old.

A long time ago, my dad had a German Shepherd that had puppies. Her milk dried up completely when the pups were about 3 weeks old. We were flying blind, but we took regular Puppy Chow, softened it in warm water, then added powdered milk to make a sort of slurry. Then we spread it in a large shallow pan and set the pups around it. They ate this mixture well and got big and fat on it. Only thing was, we had to clean them after they ate because they would crawl over into the food. They needed their tummies washed after they ate, anyway, to encourage elimination.

My parents were SO attached to this strange cat that we had to raise by hand....it was the only one to survive out of a litter of four. The kittens were a pain....but really worth the trouble after it was over.

I STRONGLY suggest getting a GIANT box of baby wipes. Remember the cat is always licking the kittens rear ends.....I think I remember it having something to do with the young kittens having a hard time pooping if its not done.

If you clean it (all of the time) with the wipes...it will not be so bad, but if you do it every once in a while....It will seem like you are having to give it a head-to-tail bath all of the time.

Like the man said, go with the Esbilac. Cow's milk is not all that digestible to small critters (including human babies) Serve warm. Get a drop on kitten's nose so they lick it and get the idea. Yeah, for all you chest thumpers- we have a little Tom that was abandoned. With wife, daughters, grandaughters- I wanted something besides me with a Y chromasome in the house. Training him to be a retreiver for dove season.

a feline retriever, heh, that would be something.
I thought the same thing about mine when I caught him walking around with a dead bunny in his mouth, he's a natural hunter
