So your friend went looking for someone to tell him what he wanted to hear. "Of course she gets nothing!!"
And hopefully, this attorney charges him enough to see this through to the end, becuase now the attorney has told him that he's gonna get this, gonna get that, and in the event that the other side doesn't agree, they are going to have to fight about it. He better have charged enough to deal with the grief he's gonna get when he starts to backpedal for a settlement, the preparation for the trial, or the grief, potential or actual, he's gonna get if he's wrong.

A man would have to be ignorant to believe and a lawyer would have to be a cheat to say she gets nothing. I dont think I have ever seen personally or heard anything where a man was able to walk away with it all. I dont think I have ever seen anything where a man or women just walked away with it all. I have seen on the news where one party got the whole farm due to one side being a totally loswer with drugs, criminal , etc. But assuming thats not the case the guy here will pay. But again it goes back to the idea of paying 100 bucks to get a penny.
best case is to hear what she wants from her lawyer. In the heat of the moment she probably told him to his face that im talking it all etc etc. But once she talks to a lawyer the lawyer more than likely will tell her what she can get and thats probably still more than what she can really get but closer to reality then she thought.
Take the offer from her lawyer examine it and if its fair and saves time and money then take it. If not counter with your bottom line and see if she bites. Court should be your last option as the judge will not be in his favor he just wont, specially if she gets the kids. Plus thats more time and money to the lawyer.

Unless there is a pre-nup of some sort, I would have to agree.
It has been stated that it is a community property state. Typically that means that whatever is acquired during the relationship is co-owned.
If her lawyer is asking for half, I take it and walk away.
Freedom and a submissive populace cannot co-exist.

There hasnt been mention about a prenump. So I assuming there isnt. Which means not good for him, even then prenumps arent always iron clad and if she has money to beat one, but then again thats more money.
Your right save the money and take 50/50. And some here say its fair that she gets nothing, I see it both ways. Whats rightfully his is his and shouldnt be taken. But on the other side of the coin you dont know the whole story. Did her direct earnings go into repair of the property or utilities, did she up keep it, her money involve upgrades? If any of that is true I would tend to believe she is entitled to something and at the very least compensation for what she put into the property.
And marriage is two entities and combining into one. So really unless written down prior to marriage what choice does a judge have but to grant 50/50?
I have only seen one occasion where one party got everything in a divorce; a wife tried to poison the husband. The Husband survived, and the woman is doing a long stretch.
At the divorce, she got nothing. Not a penny of any joint asset, such as the pension.
My buddy was retained to appeal this decsion. His argument was pretty good; they had 20 good years together, and one really, really bad day...
Here's a true account(with some additions by known family members)of a really bad situation. Young folks(30 ish) with two young kids. She was a lawyer with ambition and he was not up to her expectations. She threatened him with divorce and graphically spelled out what she would do to him in court. Seeing that he was going to lose everything he had or would ever have, he killed her and himself.
It shouldn't be this way. You push any creature into a corner and keep poking it with a sharp stick and it will bite back. I feel sorry for the kids and the man's family but have little concern for the woman's family after hearing how they'd bragged as to how she'd come out of the settlement.

sad but thats one side of the story, like to see the womens. Next to have no feeling for her or her family is low to be honest, nothing deserves somebody to be murdered just doesnt.

Rightfully, she should get NOTHING from the FIL's estate. Lawyers have a way of entangling things to get blood money. THis case will be no exception.
It would have been cheaper to taker her fishing in Alaska and have a man overboard fishing trip.
