I bought an identical set...from the same dealer...two years ago for $185. I am watching sellers raise the prices on ivory even though it appears they aren't selling at the previous prices. What happened with Obama's ban on ivory? Was it adopted? Still in process? Quietly dropped? Sellers sure act like the products are skyrocketing in scarcity and value.

That Remington 581 is pushing $500. I paid $49.95 for mine brand new. This is one that makes me scratch my head. I was thinking it was worth about $150. Boy was I a dolt! Never imagined so much interest in a budget model 22 bolt rifle. Good thing I don't want one badly. Collectors are a funny breed.

Oh well, to each his own. I'm sure some folks think I'm nuts for buying the things I do.

I's a quarter after 9 in the morning.

I've been up for a couple hours.

Had breakfast and read the Sunday paper.

    Watched a little TV.

    Now sitting at the computer.

Every movement I make...turning my head...raising my arm...results in a series of snaps, crackles and pops that would rival a big bowl of Rice Krispies.

    God I love being old...

Wife's oldest and closest friend, known each other since they were five years old and I've known her for 32 years, diagnosed with cancer yesterday. Don't know specifics on what type. I heard she's going back for follow up next week. I hope medical science can help her.

One of the many awful things about getting old is watching your friends deteriorate.

When did guns get so expensive?

I haven't perused the auctions for a while and I have been shocked at the prices I am seeing the past couple days.

    I mean, $625 for a garden variety Model 10?

    $750 for 1960s era 38 Colt Trooper?

And neither was in new condition.

Good thing there really isn't anything I need or want all that badly at this point.

I like burl Maple better anyhow... I think the ban is on importing ivory. What is already documented as being here,is still fair game.

I have a strong preference for maple burl also fish. Have you ever tried working with it though? It's an exercise in frustration that will test your patients.

Wow Doc, those are nice. Shame his pic's are pixelated.

Did a search. Three months ago these people were asking the same thing, what happened to the promise of a total ban?

If they are going to stop the extinction of elephants they will have to deploy military units to annihilate poachers. Nothing else will work. There is simply too much money to made for this thing to be stopped without killing the people, on the ground, who are killing the animals.

It would likely happen quickly if African governments wanted to save the elephants. More likely too many bribes are being paid for that to happen.

One could make grips out of liberal Democrats spines and they are already yellow.

Ivory is getting scarce. The African country's are destroying it now. When they seized it from poachers they used to sell it as seized Ivory. Now they destroy it.

I was in Mombasa Kenya a few years ago when the Kenyan Government burned like 20 tons of poached seized Ivory. Most was poached in 2007-08 when they had their election and the after election machete hack fest. The cops were engaged trying to keep the peace and kill people so the poachers went crazy killing Elephants and Rino.

Ivory cannot be legally imported, except as "trophy" tusks by the shooter. Those cannot be sold or made into smaller objects. Except by the heirs of the shooter, who certainly are not going to want dad's old tusks sitting around the living room. So they sell them and grips are made.

Last pair of bark ivory grips I saw was asking $900 a pair.

I saw something recently about Mammoth ivory. Seems there is a lot of it around and no Mammoths will be killed to get it. Not like Elephant ivory but interesting unique look.
