What would they have designed...

if you had John M. Browning, John Garand, and Eugene Stoner all working on the same project? I think it would have been something so incredible that no other firearm design would ever be necessary or there would have been a case of genius gridlock.

They would have designed the 1911.

If John Browning would have lived until say the 1940s, you wouldn't need the other two for anything except to go for coffee.

    Absolutely nothing.

    wings, they can NOT fly."

What's the 'one' thing JMB patented that facilitated the production of many modern day pistols ??????

I'm gonna go with 'the telescoping bolt' for $500, Alex.

A barrel that could lock and unlock with tipping down at the rear instead of straight blowback
edit Ok Bill long story short one of the first pistol shooter mentor I had was a Scottsman Old school EX military He wrote an excellent book on the 0 3 springfield Clark Campbell. I took Him to Camp Perry for 20 years because none of his English cars would make the trip. He was 1000 time more opinionated than me if you can believe that . On the way to Perry each year I would rave about how much bettter the Luger Po8 was than the 1911 grip angle and wormanship . That would set him off for a good heated discussion for the 8 hour trip. On the way back I would start in on the fact th Mauser 98 was so much better than the 03 Springfield and the fact that The U.S. had to pay Germany a royalies for each springfied built. this would set him off
for a heated discussion for the 8 hour trip back. I did this every year and he was like what I am now. He never caught on to the fact that I did this on purpose every year knowing he would not remember it by the time next year came around. See I have been a scalawag many many years

Brass cartridges, jacketed bullets and smokeless powder were all miraculous breakthroughs in technology.

The bolt action rifle, the lever action rifle, the slide action rifle, the repeating shotgun, revolvers, autoloading pistols all were so close to perfection 100 years ago.

There cannot be another great leap in firearms until there is a great leap in ammunition.

Honestly, humans are the weakest link in firearms technology. We cannot tolerate any more recoil, or shoot any faster, or any more accurately.
