I know I will get ripped for this dumb question, but here goes. Can you fire a 22 long rifle in a 22 mag? I have never tried, but always wondered.

The case of the 22lr has a smaller diameter than the 22 mag. The cases will expand or split. If you are shooting it out of a revolver small pieces of shrapnel can come out around the cylinder, and that could potentially be dangerous.

Would you stick your hand in the chute of a running lawn mower ?
The answer is probably - NO !
So why would you want to do such an idiot thing like that ?

Give the guy a break. He just asked a question. 22 mag cartridges are more expensive than 22LR. That's probably why he asked the question. There are cartridges out there with different names that are interchangeable.

Yes you can shoot .22LR's with a .22Mag - it's as simple as that.

But do keep in mind also, that due to the longer chamber - the .22Mag chamber will foul up.
Most of the time, when you use .22LR's in a .22Mag.. it will be just fine - even with the chamberfouling.

But do clean barrel and chamber thoroughly - as once you throw in a .22Mag, it is possible that the projectile will wedge/stick in the chamber and cause higher pressures.

Some .22LR cartridges will split or deform - others won't.

If you just need to shoot a few shots - it'll be just fine.
But manually feed them into the chamber and close the bolt - if it's semiauto/mag-feed - don't expect it to cycle or feed right

Well it just seems logical that you could shoot both the 22 long and the 22 mag through the 22 mag cylinder. You can shoot 38 spc in a 357 mag, 44 spc in the 44 mag. Thats why the question.

I have never tried it. I have the Ruger single six with both cylinders and the NAA Black Widow with both cylinders so something told me you get separate cylinders for a reason.

Had to ask. Thanks for the great info.

Yes sir 44 spc works like a charm in the 44 mag. Some are loaded pretty hot, corbon comes to mind, and fun to shoot.

We are not allowed to shoot mag rounds at the indoor range I belong to so we use the 44 spc in the ole Ruger Single Action 44 mag. Fun rounds to reload.
