I was cruising throught the ask the experts forums and happened to stumble upon the old 30 06 or 308 debate and the the 5.56 get brought up and it has its ups and downs. but a man who is shot with any bullet with the right placement should not be combat affective right? If you think about it a 308 is more likely to kill a man yes but if you wound him and his freind crawls out to save him you may kill both of them or cause the enemy to regroup and pick up its wounded. I believe the same to be true about the 9mm and 45 discussions. Give a trained soldier a gun and he ought to be able to do his job. (kill or be killed)

The problem is, at least from the military application of firearms, those we are fighting could care less about helping out their comrads who are down.......

You have to look at the mission first. Kill the enemy. Rifles do this at long range and also have the wounding potential. At long range, this is acceptable.

A handgun however is for close in fighting. It is not enough to simply wound the enemy. You must incapacitate him as a wounded man can kill you as easily as a able-bodied one given the proper tools. Three hits from a nine millimeter is probably as good as one from a .45. The trick is to get them launched before the enemy can react.

Battle Field conditions and intended/expected target(s) will dictate the weapon(s) of choice, when a choice is given.

Ask the guys doing the fighting what they need. Most will tell you the 9mm is not enough gun for the war in Iraq. I think they are quite divided as to the power of the 223. Many I have talked to would like the 308.
