Man Fails to Pay for Gas; Owner Shoots
Store owner accused of shooting out two car tires after man fails to pay for gasoline

LIVINGSTON, La., May. 27, 2006

(AP) Deputies arrested a store owner accused of shooting out two tires on a customer's vehicle after the customer said he had no money to pay for gasoline, spokesman Jason Ard of the Livingston Parish Sheriffs Office said Thursday.

The motorist had pumped $36.50 worth of gasoline, then discovered he didn't have the money to pay for it, Ard said. An argument with the store owner followed.

When the motorist tried to leave, the grocery store owner fired a shot that hit one of the customer's tires, then fired a second shot into another tire after the driver pulled back into the parking lot, deputies said.

Deputies booked Nardeep S. Bhullar, 25, the owner of Singhs Grocery, with aggravated assault, criminal damage to property and illegal discharge of a firearm.

Deputies also booked Chaz R. Watkins, 18, of Holden with theft of gasoline, Ard said.

I saw this, and all I can say is "Thank God it wasn't here in Idaho". Seems the only time we make the news it's for some lame reason. Nice to know that there are other states that have some transplanted Idahoans. [:D]

These days gasoline is a precious commodity [:D].
I was traveling thru Wyoming one time about six years ago and stopped at a small convienience store with gas pumps. Being from somewhere else that you always pay first before you pump fuel, I went inside to pay for my gas.
There was an older woman behind the counter dressed in western clothes with alot of turquoise and silver jewelry on. When I tried to pay she said " that's OK Honey, just pump your gas first and then pay me".
I said " Oh, you mean you still trust people here ". She smiled and said "sure we do. -- But we still shoot thieves".
I just know she had a 12 ga behind that counter.....[^][^]

I don't see anything wrong. He used a tool to stop a thief from escaping with a normal tool for such purposes.

The law should have taken the thief into custody and impounded his vehicle.

This country is going to h3ll.

I am from this area and I know how sensitive the people still are from the Katrina Hurricane. What most of you do not know is that when the Katrina hit. People from the NO area made a announcement (that was on the news) that they were coming to the Northshore of the Lake and they if you had it and they wanted it they were going to take it.

I can give you one example of this. In Robert, LA. a fellow had his generator running out side on his car port. He was using it to power parts of his home. Anyway, it stopped running and he thought that it was out of gas. He went out to put gas into it and saw two fellows with bolt cutters cutting on his chain. One of the men stated to him "what do yo think you are going to do about it"? The home owner pulled out his gun and blew the man away. The other ran off. This was on the news and in the local paper.

So there are alot of sensitive people in this area and with gas being so high it does not help.

phideaux4886 since you are that close then you understand what I am stating.

Now was the store owner justified- NO he was not in any strech of the imagination. He could have handled the situation differntly and prevented himself from the problems that he will be facing.

somehow I don't think that the guy trying to drive off was going to return with the rest of the money...
if I was in such a situation (can't imagine it unless station's credit card processor is kaputt) I would offer the owner something from my car as a security deposit until I returned.

Sure the reaction of the store owner was a little heavy-handed, but what else is he going to do? I understand that the police in the area are still trying to gather up their MIA officers, are they going to pursue the plate numbers of a gas thief?
