EDNEYVILLE - A Henderson County man was arrested Saturday night and charged with shooting at a vehicle in his yard, hitting and seriously injuring a passenger.

Henderson County Sheriff's deputies arrested Larry Dean Ledbetter, 45, after they say he shot Leicester resident Renee Vanhoy, Detective Erik Summey said.

The shooting occurred as Renee and her husband, John Vanhoy, drove through Ledbetter's yard on Clear Creek Road, a residential area of Edneyville.

Summey said the couple drove through the lawn as they left Ledbetter's brother's home, which is next door.

Renee Vanhoy was transported to Mission Hospitals and was in serious condition Sunday night, hospital spokeswoman Merrell Gregory said.

Summey said Ledbetter told authorities he had been having problems with people trespassing and vandalizing his property.

He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and discharging a weapon into a vehicle, Summey said.

He was released Saturday night on a written promise to appear.

Ledbetter could not be reached Sunday. He is scheduled to appear in court today.

You mean it's against the law to shoot someone driving through your yard?

Well.. I guess if they were chasing you in your yard.. then you'd be allowed to shoot.

Doesn't seem like a legit reason to me - to shoot someone who's merely driving on the property.
Maybe he'd be justified if his yard was fenced in and marked "Private property" - and/or they posed a direct threat to him...

Seriously, the hillbillies didn't have reverse on the car and made a lap round' the back yard. Owner was peturbed the driver knocked over the moonshine still and ran over the redbone's doghouse and crushed his prize coondog. The whole process jarred the trailer house off the blocks and the owner fell out the back door nakid...

He was released on a "written promise to appear". Ha, got to be a little redneck town. [:D] Around here you would only be
released after you paid up, bond out.

Reminds me of that guy who shot and killed some kid who was crossing his lawn. It's morons like this that give all gun owners a bad name, the "my gun can solve any problem" rednecks. These inbred retards are no better than the ghetto thugs of Washington DC and Detroit. And he shot a woman too, what a big man! I hope they throw the book at this guy.

Easy now...Leicester (locals pronounce it "Lester")is a thriving suburb of the very eclectic city of Asheville. I know a guy from there that has most of his teeth AND 3 outta 4 of the same size tires on his truck!

Asheville is very divided intho NSEW. North Asheville is home to the Grove Park Inn...a masterpiece of a mountain resort. South Asheville has the Biltmore Estate...the largest house in the US. East & West Asheville are home to the good ole country boys that were there before tourism found the NC Mountains.

If you ever get to go to Asheville, you should. It's a great place that takes its tourism seriously and does a good job. Best Food? A little resturant downtown called the 1812 diner (I think). Best day? Go to the Biltmore Estate. You will be amazed at the grandeur. I sometimes get ticked off at the "conspicious consumption" but Mr. Vanderbilt had it so he could spend it as he wished.

    Rock On!

There's more to it to than that. They were harrassing that old man. It blew up in their face. That kid and his family were just as culpable and the police for letting it fester up. Best thing to do is leave people the hell alone.

if he was in danger i could see it, because cops do it all the time, but the way the media has worded it, we can only speculate, i know if my brother lived next door we wouldn't be getting along, you never know what kind of feud or conduct was going on before they drove through his yard, something sounds funny as to why he had a gun so handy, and was willing to use it, if they where friends of his brothers more than likely he knew them, and they knew him before they decided to take a drive through his yard

I had a neighbor that had a corner lot and the kids loved to take a shortcut through the yard. One evening he revised the landscaping and added a border of nice sized stones. That night late he heard a loud crunch sound. The next day one of the kids up the block had a redesigned rocker panel on his Honda. Cured the problem.

I got the update on Asheville's noon news today.
Larry Ledbetter appeared in court. The magistrate informed him that if convicted on all counts, he will be sentenced to life in the state pen.
Then the magistrate released Ledbetter, with no bail.
Police said that the woman had one knee shattered by a bullet, and another bullet in her back. Seven bullets total struck the truck.

Somehow I think alcohol was involved.

BTW when writer Thomas Wolfe wrote "You Can Never Go Home Again" he was referring to his hometown of Ashville.

    Update:

    From WLOS tv this morning:

Albert Ledbetter, brother of shooter Larry Ledbetter, was interviewed on tv. Albert said that when John Vanhoy and his wife Renee were leaving his house on that night, "John was too drunk to drive. I tried to stop him."

Albert Ledbetter said that as he watched Vanhoy drive off, "I sat back down and watched the race."

Albert said that he believed his brother was trying to protect his wife when he shot the truck. He said his brother's wife was out in the yard trying to stop John Vanhoy, who was running over Larry Ledbetter's trees. Albert Ledbetter said his brother heard his wife out in the yard yelling "Stop, stop!" and then ran outside and began shooting.

John Vanhoy was interviewed, and said "I am on medication and can't remember anything."

When asked about the drunk driving allegation, he had no comment.
