Question for construction guys

I have a rental that needs the bathroom flooring replaced. Currently it's linoleum. I have seen ceramic tile flooring but wonder if carpeting (like used in a kitchen) is available. Perhaps water splashing would be a problem. Anyone used this?

Thanks guys,

Agreed, I personally wouldn't worry as much about the splashing water, but the people that don't know how to aim [:(]

Do not put carpet in a bathroom. This isn't 1950. And it didn't even belong in there then.

I am still baffled by the fact the builder of my current home put carpet in the master.

To their credit, there is a separate toilet room that has vinyl, but still.

I had hoped to pull the carpet out this winter and tile it, but the project keeps being put off.

Frankly, there is little about a bathroom that is more disgusting than a carpeted floor.

Go with tile. No carpet in bathrooms. Winter time you can throw a space rug down if the Mrs. doesn't want cold feet. [:D]

Carpet + water= mold. It won't be where you can see it. At first.

I have rentals, I am a fan of the peel and stick vinyl tiles 18"x 18" are less work than the 12" x 12". Have an issue just cut an X in the center of the tile, peel it up and replace. If you try to get it started from the edge it's easy to mess up the tile beside it. Be sure to buy extra tile when you get it for later repairs.

No to the carpet, puts you at risk for a liability claim if it grows mold.

Carpeting is a haven for germs, yuk, it should NEVER be used in a bathroom!

If you go with tile make sure you have a proper subfloor. You need 1 1/4 inches of plywood. So, if you currently have 3/4 inch of plywood, you need to add a half inch of plywood. Then go with a half inch of the concrete board before you install the tile.

Since it's a rental just get a cheap porcelain tile that will look good in the room. Porcelain is stronger than ceramic in case of some numbnutz dropping things.

+1,000,000 Tile and cheap tile. We had expensive tile in our one rental and the tenant's kids, somehow broke it. Yeah, were still trying to figure out, how they made it look like, someone drove a bulldozer through there in two months. Floor was replaced with cheapo home depot tile I found on clearance. When I sell this place, I will put better tile in. Oakie

IMO carpet should not be used in either the kitchen nor the bathroom.

You may want to check local building codes if you want carpet in either of those locations.

Years ago I was renting a section of an old house that had been divided up into apartments.

When a city inspector came by for the yearly occupancy inspection he wrote a warning to the landlord about the carpet in the kitchen.

Being handy with such things, I pulled out the carpet, put down 1/4" plywood down over the existing wood, which showed signs of cupping and then the tile.

    Swapped labor for rent.

Go with tile and Laticrete Spectralock epoxy grout and you won't have any issues. The epoxy grout is practically stain proof and doesn't need to be sealed. It's also highly adhesive and won't chip out over time like many of the cement based grouts can.

    Let her feet get cold!
When the Mrs. hits that throw rug at full speed in the dark, skids headlong into the shower, and bruises her whatchamacallit... it'll be your fault. Even if you're not the one who insisted on the rug! [B)]
