    I'm having a 257 Roberts built on a Mauser 98.

Great care is being taken to ensure it is a straight shooter. I'm having an actual, honest-to-God gunsmith do the build, but it's still a budget rifle. The barrel, for instance is an Adams & Bennett, not Shilen. The trigger is a BOLD, not Timney. There are the parts that were in the box at a garage sale, so I got 'em on the cheap.

I think $250 would be the top end for a scope.

Here's what I'm not going to put on it:
    Bushnell
    Barska
    BSA
    Tasco
    Simmons

Obviously, Leupold is a consideration, what are some other suggestions?

Going to buy a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 and been podering scope choices. I'm definitely going to a DNZ one piece mount ring system. I'm thinking a Leupold VX1 2-7X33 would be a good choice since my farthest shot would probably be 125 yds. Your thoughts?

im looking into getting a scope or a reddot for a 20 gauge 870 slug gun. Got anything good for me? it needs to have good eye relief, a low power(2-7x32 max), and be fairly cheap. The shots will be pretty close, so like i said before i needs to be a low power....

I have a reddot on my 357, but I usually keep shots to under 100 yds.. great jump gun when you are walking.

Why don't you look at some of these new AR-15 Tac scopes with 30mm scope body and 1.5-5X.

The Burris is a nice scope.

You don't need the higher power for shot placement, but you do need it for identification during the twenty minutes of sunrise / sunset twilight time. A 40 mm lens would be even better. However, any Leupold is an excellent choice.
I agree the 2-7X is an excellent choice for normal woods hunting and the occasional long shot.

I would go with a tried in true Leupold in either 1-4x20 VXII or 1.5-5x20 VXIII. With a low power scope you don't need a big objective ti transmit available light. I also think the sleek lines and 1" tube compliment a fast handling lever rifle.

Get the version with a rail, & you can use a Leupold M8-2x.

I sold my stainless Guide Gun, since I now live in the lower 48, and replaced it with a Savage 99 in .300 Savage. If I still had mine, I would go RobOzs way with a low-powered, like 1-4 or 1.75-5. Or if you have an extended rail you could put a pistol scope. Either way, keep it low powered.

Edit" I've always felt that 40mm scope bells looks comically large on a lever gun. I do like the more trim look of the smaller, lower powered options. You don't need 7 or 9 power to shoot out to 125 yards. You should have a good pair of binoculars for identifying game, not the scope.

I personally find 4x to be too much in some hunting situations. It does keep the price down and things simple like you said though. I was always big on 3-9 scopes, but lately, I have settled on 2-7 power. They are perfect for where I hunt and I think they fit a .45-70 nicely.

I would look for a 1.5X6 Burris Signature on the auction side. New or used you can't go wrong. It is a great scope.

The 45-70 has RECOIL my 375 H&H and a Browning BAR in 338 Win Mag wore the same scope and it never let me down.

Several great scopes come to mind that would work wonderful on your 45-70, if you don't mind spending a little money you really can not beat the Swarovski Z-6 1-6X24EE or 1.7-10X42:

For the same general price the March 1-10X24 is truly incredible:

For 1/3 the cost of those 2 you can have the new Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6X24, I have not used this scope so I can not vouch for it, but I have never been let down by Vortex:

Now if money is tight you can also look at the Vortex Diamondback 1.75X32:
