Safe Ammo for Mini-30's

I recently purchased a mini-30 from gun broker and now have heard that this rifle will not accept / fire surplus ammo. What is the problem with the ammo and / or rifle?

I do not think you will have any problem with the Russian ammo, just clean your gas piston and gas port out every once in a while and you should have no problems! The only problem right now is finding any surplus russkie ammo!

It will accept and fire surplus ammo. Some of the old Russian surplus ammo was steel coated with laquer that works great for loose tolerance AKs but in most other rifles the laquer would tend to gum up the extractor after a while. Another problem I have seen is the the rim of steel shells cracking upon extraction. These problems don't happen often and if you're cleaning your gun properly it may not happen at all.

I heard minis were .30 american wheras ak, sks etc actualy have a .311 bore?

When the mini-30 was first introduced,I recall reading an article in G&A that the bore was tapered - .311 at the chamber, .308 at the muzzel, to allow for the differences between the US ammo and the rest of the world.

I've shot Wolf and Bear through mine and didn't have a problem.

mine eats everything I've run through it. Mostly wolf hp and fmj and also a few of my AP steel core rounds for testing functionality. works great, last long time[:D]

Same as everone else, I shot 95% cheep bottom of the barrel surplus out of mine, no problems with loading after the mag lips were fixed, so whats safe in your Mini-30?? the stuff that goes BANG[:D]

Thanks everyone,

I was getting worried all the surplus I had for my SKS was not usable in my mini-30. I will check the gas ports after every shoot. I purchase some Wolf HP and will give it a try.
