Caught This Yesterday

Caught this Fox snake yesterday in the middle of the road.
I estimate it's at least 3 feet long. Brought it home to show my son. Something other than video games for him to be occupied with. I'll keep it for a while if it eats properly that is otherwise I'll let it go where I caught it.
The tank is 10" wide.

My 15 year old daughter would have a cow over that. She'd carry it around the house hanging from her neck,(Drives her mother crazy).

We stay in trouble, me for bringing those snakes home and her for carrying them around the house.

Oh well, we have fun and mom don't get to carried away about it.

We always used to keep kingsnakes - used to feed them rattlers.

Years ago, a fox snake developed the habit of crawling up to the undercarriage of my car and resting on the frame. I suspected there might be openings in the body of the car where it could make its way into the passenger compartment, and I didn't want that. Imagine how hard it would be to concentrate on driving with a snake crawling up your britches leg. So I would try to remember to let the car run a while before engaging the clutch, so that if the snake happened to be under there, it would crawl down and go away.

Once I was in a hurry to get to the fishing hole, and forgot. After I had driven 40 miles and parked at the creek, I noticed what looked like a cable hanging down beside a front wheel. It was that snake, all beaten up, with several abrasions. Apparently it had tried repeatedly to crawl down while I was tooling along on the interstate. After a while it came down and "limped" off into the grass. I don't know whether it survived or not, and if it didn't, I'm sorry. But if it had come inside and crawled up my leg, probably neither one of us would have survived.

It may, but I don't think it will eat in that cage. Too cramped.

Doubt it will survive long in that little tank.
Best to just release it now before it gets stressed too badly.
    Just my opinion.[;)]

Don't know why not see em all the time in the flea market with smaller tanks
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

At least throw some dirt in the tank so he thinks he's on land. I doubt he'll live long in captivity.

Let him go. The tank has to be 1.5 times his length in order to be comfortable. They also need heat, humidity and shelter etc. As for the flea market, they are just there to sell. They put them in a feeding enclosure to eat etc. You wanna teach your son something, teach him how to be kind to wild animals.

Looks like a harmless Brown Water Snake (Nerodia taxispilota) like we find here in the south. However, you might have a slightly different species where you live.

He's in a much larger cage now guys. That small tank was just temporary. I didn't expect to come home with a large snake that day. I did save it's life though cause as I was catching it 2 cars came by and like most people one of them most likely would have plastered it to the asphalt.
The plan is to feed it a mouse and if he don't eat it he'll be free.
If he does start eating good he'll be free in a few weeks anyway. I've had several reptiles as pets over the years and most do well.
