Black Walnut Will Be Available Soon

I am going to cut down a black walnut tree pretty soon.
This is a 16 inch diameter tree, up in the NC mountains. Trunk is pretty straight with little taper, don't see any cat face or other imperfections.

If you would like some wood for a gunstock, or for anything else, let me know. If someone would like to try a rifle stock, I will make you a quartersawn 3x6 that is 30 inches long.

Wood is free, you pay shipping.

I made a knife holder from black walnut that was cut nearby. This is a block that is 4 inches wide, by 8 inches deep and 12 inches high. It is sanded all smooth and varnished and it really is beautiful wood.

OK I am not at home where I can measure my Tennessee Mountain Rifle but how about a 3x6 that is 48 inches long?
If you want it send me an email.

are you by any chance going to remove the stump/root ball area?? if so, I would pay for your labor for a piece of quartersawn wood from below the ground level. This is the area with the most crotch figure and fiddleback from what I am told.[;)]

Allen, I'd love to be able to get a chunk of it. Just let me know when and I can provide my FedEx acct # for you to ship it to me on.

The sap should be down now, so it should make some good gun furniture.

justc what size wood do you want from below ground level?

I enjoy working with chainsaws, I own two nice Stihls and I just bought a $580 Husqvarna.

But, digging that stump up, that doesn't sound like much fun.

Also once you dug it up you would have to clean that wood off real good, dirt and rocks are real bad on chainsaws. I might do it I will have to see.

Any of y'all who want some wood, send me an email and tell me what size wood you want.

If you have enough to spare I could use enough to put a stock on my remington 1899 side by side. Thanks.

guys i don't want to be a kill joy, but you may want to check on regulations on shipping green lumber , i don't know about your states but here in WI you can only shipped green wood a max of 50 miles
, DNR don't want any bugs that may be in the wood going on a trip

Make sure you know what your doing when felling that tree. Black walnut will split from one end to the other if not cut correctly when felling. Notch and Hinge is the only method.

Allen, from what I have learned (on the internet, so you know it's true) the best "figure" comes from the wood at or below the surface. But then again, I am no gunstock maker.

Heck, I'll take whatever I can get. I will send you some of the balck walnut tree I have been offered. I think I have found a guy with a mill that will cut it so we can see if it is firewood or worth keeping as gunstock material.

I really don't want to rain on your parade. But have you spoken to anyone in the timber business about buying it?

I the 70's we had a family down the road that came home from church to find two black walnut trees had been stolen from their front yard.

It's possible you could sell the tree as it stands and buy something nice for everyone who's already asked. And have money left over. If you were so inclined.

I'd hate for you to have a 'if only I knew' moment.

Save the sawdust and wood chips for smokin' wood.
