Need a good .243 for my son

I see a lot in the auction, but I'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to knowing what is best. I want something that will last him a lifetime and I'd like to keep the price reasonable (rifle and scope <$500)

Thanks!

I think any .243 will kill him if you shoot him in the right spot.

Look for a Savage with Accutrigger. no frills, good out of box accuracy.

Got to agree with He Dog. For around $500, the Savage with the accu-trigger is the way to go.

Not sure if it meets your price criteria, but I'd pick a remington Model 7 with the 20" barrel and a Leupold M8 4x scope.

the ruger guns are good, but not sure about their prices.

Otherwise a Savage is a fine choice.

    Hi,
You may want to consider a single shot, such as the New England and H&R models. It is a safe rifle which teaches the importance of the first shot being well placed and you have the flexibilty of changing to other calibers, shotgun or even muzzle loading barrels. Good luck and congrats onbeing your son into the shooting sports.

Thanks everyone, I do like the Savage.

I also like the Weatherby Compact (because it comes with two stocks for when he gets older)...

If anyone here has had one of these, I'd really appreciate some feedback.

    Thanks.

Savage is a good one,but the best deal for the money is a Stevens 200.

There are quite o few Savage youth guns around and you might score a nice used one. They should sell for a lot less than $500. The scopes on the package guns are not great but will work for a year or so. It seems to mee the NEF single shots recoil more than others due to their light weight out front. You might consider a 223 Rem. It's cheap to practice with and almost no recoil. For hunting use a premium bullet and use some care with shooting position.

I just sold a Remington 700 BDL for $300 with bases and rings, was a great gun,3/4" groups at 100 yds. I needed something bigger.

You could find a Tikka in that range. I think the trigger is just as good as the savage that everyone raves about, and everything else is far superior in my opinion. The one I shoot is every bit as good (accuracy, fit & finish, trigger, and feel) as my A-Bolt.

Nope but keep your eyes open, I see used ones for sale fairly often.

The savage is a "working mans" gun. They may not be pretty but they are a fine rifle that gets the job done and you don't have to worry about a few "field kisses". I bought a 110 for my son in .243 and it has been an excellent gun. The only thing I don't like is the fixed magazine or should I say the ability to dump the rounds through a floor plate.

Well, thanks everyone! I ended up going with the Weatherby Vanguard Compact in .243. Mainly because of weight, fit etc. I put a 3-9X40 Buckmaster Scope on it with the new BDC reticle.

I really appreciate all of your thoughts.
