Ever thought about moving without having to worry about finding a new job? If you could keep your same pay, etc, where in the US would you move to?

I did just that in 2007 from Illinois to Montana- I had looked at jobs when I visited last but no concrete offers. it didn't matter I knew I could find a job. moving closer to my son was all that mattered.

1998. Left Colorado, moved back to Virginia, my native state. Company funded move (Yes!!!!!) My job changed to one that was "We don't care where you live so long as you can get to an airport".

We have lived in a number of places, worked in a lot more, but like it better here. Carolina/ TN would be a close second.

Left Central California in 2007 to Western Washington and now live in Central Washington. Best move I ever did was leaving California. Should have left 25 years ago.

    For ruger41 and LaidbackDan:

The kin-folk said, "Jed move away from there."
They said, "California's the place you ought to be."

From me (with tongue firmly implanted in cheek); a 4th generation born and raised in Washington resident. [;)]

During my last Summer in college (Chicago) I was wondering what the rest of the US looked like. I had grown-up on the West Coast and while at Chicago we had travelled around the Northeast and I had been in the service in S.Carolina. So to see the rest of the south and Mountain West I got a Greyhound 30 day pass and I think I covered about 10,000 miles through about 25 states. There was a lot of pretty (and not so pretty) country and some nice (and not so nice) people. But I got an appreciation for a lot of places that I had only seen on TV or read about. I ended up back in Washington State, but there are a lot of other places, even outside of the US that I could live and feel good about it.

Being retired, my pay would be the same if I moved. SW Ohio is fine, but would still like to have another home in a western state such as Arizona.

Grew up in So.Fla ( paradise lost ) and had my own (2 man ) business for 23yrs working on Motor Yachts.
Sold both the business and house ( right at the peak of real state bubble in 2005 ) and moved to Georgia just south of Atlanta ( no blue water here ) and after fumbling around for a few months trying to find something new to do I started another totally different business, money isn't as good but the lifestyle is way much better.
I have no regrets about moving.

I live in Charleston SC, God's country. But..... if I were to move I like the mountains around Asheville, maybe Hendersonville.
Only I would love to live their in the summer and Charleston in the winter that would be ideal.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Fled CA in 1992 after the AWB was enacted and I realized the socialists were in charge there. Went to Ohio and found the City of Cincinnati wasn't much better than CA. City gov't was very leftist and anti-gun. Also struggled financially as I never did find FT work after 4 years there.

Moved to Utah in 1996. Beautiful state and nice people. Very gun friendly. I liked it except I still couldn't find decent work. Had a FT job but pay was crap.

In 2001 I took a job offer in AR. That job was sort of OK but I got fired after 3 years. Found a FT teaching gig right away but had a horribly long commute (230 miles round trip each day). In 2008 got the same job with better pay 15 minutes from home. AR very gun friendly.

But leaving friends, family, the familiar in 1992 was very tough. Struggled financially for 16 years. Still miss my friends.

I have lived in Oregon, Washington, Florida, California, Florida (2nd time), Texas, Maryland, and back to Texas.

If there is a new and interesting opportunity I usually take it.

I moved from Missouri to NM in 1979. I had a job offer and NM was where I wanted to be. Only thing I would add is another $100,000/yr to my income and a summer home in maybe Wyoming or South Dakota.

I don't think I would have been brave enough to pick up and move with no job offer, though maybe if I were out of work already...

I grew up there - Hanahan, actually. Pop was a submariner, stationed at Chas. Naval Base. Loved the place, they have buildings there that have stood for 400 years. If I ever move again, that'll be the place.

I've been eye balling West Coast Oregon near the ocean like I am here in California for years (closer to decades). Gots to be close to a source of seafood [:D]. But as years go on I'm thinkig Washington (West of the Sound). Then again I fear I'll end up dead in California.

To many friends and family to ever think about leaving central WA. The job depends on the people who trust me and to start again somewhere else is just not conceivable.

Have thought about moving from Minnesota every day, sometimes several times a day, since about October, when it became obvious that winter would once more return for its 11-month run. I can retire at any moment and am hanging on only for health-insurance reasons until my wife turns 65 in another year. (I don't want to get caught in the Obamacare mess.) I often fantasize about the cheaper land, better climate and friendlier politics of Missouri or Tennessee. But (and, as PeeWee Herman said, everyone has a big but) who would feed my cats, and how would I haul antique cars and tractors and tons of tools, etc., etc.? And, oh, yes, I also have my two kids and four grandkids in town. I fear my dreams of heading south to a red state are only that: Dreams.[;)]

The Sun Valley of Idaho. Although they do have occasional bad weather, I've driven through blizzards in Wyoming and Utah. Then stopped to put shorts on driving through this part of Idaho.
Never went shooting there. But looks like lots of open range to shoot on. And a job is never a problem for a truck driver. You don't have to live in the same area as your employer.
Only problem is getting my wife to move there.

I thing about moving every time my wife yells at me. I bought 2.5 acres in Spring Creek, NV about 8 years ago and would love to build a log home there. My lawyer advises against that!

Build it. Sign it over sell it to a family member on your side for $10.00 and get them to sign a lifetime lease to it.

    Virginia or North Carolina.

I couldn't live anywhere flat. And they still get the change of season, but winter isn't sooooooooo looooooong...

I love Davis County NV, very beautiful area, But the best would be summers in WY and winter in AZ. With my retirement I could move there and live like a king, but instead I will continue to live in SoCal as a pauper. I have way to much family within a 30 min drive to ever consider leaving this area.

My wife and I have been looking lately at a lot of places to see where we want to spend our retirement years. We drove across the US and back last July and August looking at many beautiful places.

We're planning a trip to Cuenca, Ecuador in June to see what they've got down there. We've been reading up on a lot of expats in that part of the world that are living very well on their retirements from the US. Amazing thing about Cuenca is that the temperature is almost a constant 70 to 74 degrees during the day year around even though It's on the equator but the elevation is at 8,000 ft. above sea level which keeps it cool. They also don't have mosquitos which is a big plus. They are also on the US Dollar in Ecuador which is good and last but not least they also have very good medical care there. Anyway we shall see for ourselves before we decide.

We've been to every state in the US and there's a lot of beautiful places in this country but if we retire here it will probably be some where near where we were both born and raised in the Mountains of East Tennessee. I gotta believe that God was working in those mountains late on the 6th day of creation when he said "it is done"! I can't do it any better than this! He put his tools up, washed up and went to bed!
