KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- President Barack Obama said Sunday that comments reportedly made by the owner of a U.S. pro basketball team are "incredibly offensive racist statements," before casting them as part of a continuing legacy of slavery and segregation that Americans must confront.
"When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything, you just let them talk," Obama said when asked to respond to the reported comments from Los Angeles Clippers' owner Donald Sterling.
Obama's description of the controversy as part of a larger historical context is the latest example of his continuing willingness to expound on matters of race in his second term.
After avoiding much mention of race relations during his campaign to become the first black president and in his first term, the president last summer offered a personal reflection in response to the shooting of black teenager Trayvon Martin. And now Obama has spoken out against an audio recording of a man identified as Sterling telling his girlfriend not to bring black people to games.
The firestorm over Sterling's comments has quickly engulfed the National Basketball Association.
Obama cast the comments through a broader prism of racism in America, adding that "we constantly have to be on guard on racial attitudes that divide us rather than embracing our diversity as a strength."
"The United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation, that's still there, the vestiges of discrimination," Obama said during a news conference in Malaysia, where he was traveling.
"We've made enormous strides, but you're going to continue to see this percolate up every so often," he added. "And I think that we just have to be clear and steady in denouncing it, teaching our children differently, but also remaining hopeful that part of why statements like this stand out some much is because there has been this shift in how we view ourselves."
In the recording attributed to Sterling recording and posted on the website TMZ, a male voice questions his girlfriend's association with minorities. TMZ reported the woman, V. Stiviano, is of black and Mexican descent.
The man asks Stiviano not to broadcast her association with black people or bring black people to games. The man specifically mentions Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson on the recording, saying, "Don't bring him to my games, OK?"
Obama said he's confident NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will address the matter. He said the NBA has "an awful lot of African American players, it's steeped in African American culture. And I suspect that the NBA is going to be deeply concerned in resolving this."
Silver had said the NBA needs to confirm authenticity of the audio tape and interview both Sterling and the woman in the recording. He called the tape "disturbing and offensive" and promised to investig

I am White.....why can't they just be Brown or Black? Of the dozen or so Black people than I see and talk to every day, not one of them calls themselves African-American.
I wonder what percentage of Black people in this country were really born in Africa.
After all, he is a Chocolate Jesus with a pen and phone. That gives the "mental midget" the right to do anything he wants to.
Whatever you do, don't voice your opinion or he may draw another red line in the sand...[:o)]
No truer words were ever spoken Barry, you are living proof of them. Wonder how many aahhhh's and uhhhhhhh's he did while making that off teleprompter statement?

Yeah, right. Obama kept his mouth shut about race during the election, but now he opens his mouth every chance he gets, to gin up hatred and to divide Americans. Whether it is the black professor resisting arrest by the white policeman, or Trayvon, or this case, the Great Community Organizer can't get enough of supposedly racially divisive problems.
Barack, with all due respect you have worn out your welcome. Get Out of Town!!
Reading POTUS comments I find them rather mild...and I agree with him about this Sterling guy. If Sterling said what he said, he is toast. Heck, the guy owns a team in a league of 60% black guys and he is making millions off of them. But POTUS is also an American citizen and when asked he has to right to respond. I put this Sterling loon in the same bin with the Bundy loon. White folks should just keep their mouths shut talking about race if they don't know what they are talking about IMO. And these two guys are the most recent that should zip it.
comments were out of line racists BUT Obama has no business making comments of citizens private lives...isnt there more important business He is a Big race baiter plain and simple

Now I am not sure if this means as a white guy I have no right to speak or just can't speak about the things I have seen and dealt with in my life. Could you explain a bit please?

And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche

Indeed. His "wife" was likely born male. His proclivities are for the ho-mos. Larry Sinclair wasn't making things up...

On the flip side, there are bad white, black, brown, red, yellow its matters not what race or color. He said if you can treat others how you want to be treated, you and others will be happier, those that want you to drop to their level will win if that happens.
The third side to this triangle, is trust if you cannot trust them, don't turn your back on them. My mom was a racist, a real bigot. In 1974 a friend followed me home to help me lift a body off my cj5, when he drove up, my mom bolted out of the house holding a shotgun, she ordered him off, I never thought she would act this way. Here is the low part, she sold insurance, she would go into homes of other races, she padded her pockets at other expense, I loved my mom, but you talk about a bigot. My wife is Malaysian Chinese, you talk about blowing a gasket, thought she was going to metal down right there

Fair enough.
You take it from here.
However when the person currently holding that office speaks, he cannot in any shape, form or fashion speak as just the average Joe on the street. It is not HIS opinion at that point. It is the opinion of the POTUS and therefore it is best for a person in that position (and others like it) to politely refuse to wade into those muddy waters.
We were always taught to say to the media while working for the military or State Dept that we had no comment to make on a subject and that it is being handled by the appropriate person(s) or agency(ies) and to direct them to the Public Affairs Officer.
Rant NOT over for another 900 plus days!

Sure, will be glad to. We all have the right to say what we want and if it makes us look silly or racist, so be it. Some folks either don't care if they look stupid to the great majority of folks, or look like an out and out racist. Some are just stupid like Bundy and this Clippers owner. I learned however a long time ago from my maternal grandmother that if you don't have something good to say about someone, best to keep your thoughts to yourself....but sometimes the boys just can't help it like these two fools. Like I said, we all have the right to respond including POTUS and any other citizen....but if you are in the public eye I also learned a long time ago that you should watch yourself carefully and be guarded at all times....when in doubt, shutup.
Now see you just said the same thing I have been told since birth, but that has nothing to do with being white. [8D]
That is not a direction I want this country to be headed.

sure what he said is not politically correct but my gosh get over it
