BY JULIE PACE
AP WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- President Barack Obama said Sunday that comments reportedly made by the owner of a U.S. pro basketball team are "incredibly offensive racist statements," before casting them as part of a continuing legacy of slavery and segregation that Americans must confront.

"When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything, you just let them talk," Obama said when asked to respond to the reported comments from Los Angeles Clippers' owner Donald Sterling.

Obama's description of the controversy as part of a larger historical context is the latest example of his continuing willingness to expound on matters of race in his second term.

After avoiding much mention of race relations during his campaign to become the first black president and in his first term, the president last summer offered a personal reflection in response to the shooting of black teenager Trayvon Martin. And now Obama has spoken out against an audio recording of a man identified as Sterling telling his girlfriend not to bring black people to games.

The firestorm over Sterling's comments has quickly engulfed the National Basketball Association.

Obama cast the comments through a broader prism of racism in America, adding that "we constantly have to be on guard on racial attitudes that divide us rather than embracing our diversity as a strength."

"The United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation, that's still there, the vestiges of discrimination," Obama said during a news conference in Malaysia, where he was traveling.

"We've made enormous strides, but you're going to continue to see this percolate up every so often," he added. "And I think that we just have to be clear and steady in denouncing it, teaching our children differently, but also remaining hopeful that part of why statements like this stand out some much is because there has been this shift in how we view ourselves."

In the recording attributed to Sterling recording and posted on the website TMZ, a male voice questions his girlfriend's association with minorities. TMZ reported the woman, V. Stiviano, is of black and Mexican descent.

The man asks Stiviano not to broadcast her association with black people or bring black people to games. The man specifically mentions Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson on the recording, saying, "Don't bring him to my games, OK?"

Obama said he's confident NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will address the matter. He said the NBA has "an awful lot of African American players, it's steeped in African American culture. And I suspect that the NBA is going to be deeply concerned in resolving this."

Silver had said the NBA needs to confirm authenticity of the audio tape and interview both Sterling and the woman in the recording. He called the tape "disturbing and offensive" and promised to investig

African-American....just hearing the words makes me laugh.

I am White.....why can't they just be Brown or Black? Of the dozen or so Black people than I see and talk to every day, not one of them calls themselves African-American.

I wonder what percentage of Black people in this country were really born in Africa.

Why can't he stick his nose into this issue.
After all, he is a Chocolate Jesus with a pen and phone. That gives the "mental midget" the right to do anything he wants to.

Whatever you do, don't voice your opinion or he may draw another red line in the sand...[:o)]

Obama: "we constantly have to be on guard on racial attitudes that divide us rather than embracing our diversity as a strength."

Yeah, right. Obama kept his mouth shut about race during the election, but now he opens his mouth every chance he gets, to gin up hatred and to divide Americans. Whether it is the black professor resisting arrest by the white policeman, or Trayvon, or this case, the Great Community Organizer can't get enough of supposedly racially divisive problems.

Barack, with all due respect you have worn out your welcome. Get Out of Town!!

Reading POTUS comments I find them rather mild...and I agree with him about this Sterling guy. If Sterling said what he said, he is toast. Heck, the guy owns a team in a league of 60% black guys and he is making millions off of them. But POTUS is also an American citizen and when asked he has to right to respond. I put this Sterling loon in the same bin with the Bundy loon. White folks should just keep their mouths shut talking about race if they don't know what they are talking about IMO. And these two guys are the most recent that should zip it.

comments were out of line racists BUT Obama has no business making comments of citizens private lives...isnt there more important business He is a Big race baiter plain and simple

If the fella is such a racist and it seems like he is, why do any people other than just full blooded white guys play for him?

EVERYTHING is a racial issue to blacks, whether they be the lowest rag picker in the Detroit slums or the President of the United States.

Indeed. His "wife" was likely born male. His proclivities are for the ho-mos. Larry Sinclair wasn't making things up...

Growing up my dad explained things this way, there are good white, black, brown, red, yellow its matters not what race color!
On the flip side, there are bad white, black, brown, red, yellow its matters not what race or color. He said if you can treat others how you want to be treated, you and others will be happier, those that want you to drop to their level will win if that happens.
The third side to this triangle, is trust if you cannot trust them, don't turn your back on them. My mom was a racist, a real bigot. In 1974 a friend followed me home to help me lift a body off my cj5, when he drove up, my mom bolted out of the house holding a shotgun, she ordered him off, I never thought she would act this way. Here is the low part, she sold insurance, she would go into homes of other races, she padded her pockets at other expense, I loved my mom, but you talk about a bigot. My wife is Malaysian Chinese, you talk about blowing a gasket, thought she was going to metal down right there

Yes everyone has a right to their opinions and beliefs including the POTUS.

However when the person currently holding that office speaks, he cannot in any shape, form or fashion speak as just the average Joe on the street. It is not HIS opinion at that point. It is the opinion of the POTUS and therefore it is best for a person in that position (and others like it) to politely refuse to wade into those muddy waters.

We were always taught to say to the media while working for the military or State Dept that we had no comment to make on a subject and that it is being handled by the appropriate person(s) or agency(ies) and to direct them to the Public Affairs Officer.

Sure, will be glad to. We all have the right to say what we want and if it makes us look silly or racist, so be it. Some folks either don't care if they look stupid to the great majority of folks, or look like an out and out racist. Some are just stupid like Bundy and this Clippers owner. I learned however a long time ago from my maternal grandmother that if you don't have something good to say about someone, best to keep your thoughts to yourself....but sometimes the boys just can't help it like these two fools. Like I said, we all have the right to respond including POTUS and any other citizen....but if you are in the public eye I also learned a long time ago that you should watch yourself carefully and be guarded at all times....when in doubt, shutup.

Now see you just said the same thing I have been told since birth, but that has nothing to do with being white. [8D]

Many years ago, when America was normal, it would have seemed silly for the president of the US to make a public statement about a comment made by a private, unelected citizen. But things have change. If a private citizen makes the wrong statement, it now looks like the government will try and make you look like a racist.

That is not a direction I want this country to be headed.

Glad to see Bundy and Stirling getting the "Race" heat ...takes the pressure off the South....LOL! Freedom of speech went out the window when the US elected the racist for POTUS.I am so sick of America apologizing for slavery. The more its talked about, the more its practiced. Blacks will only become equals when they accept being black.

When Obama condemns black on white racist attitudes, I will believe he is serious about the subject. Until then, he remains as racist as Sterling.

well I want to see the POS go to Chicago and speak about the hate crime against each other. or talk about the knock out game as being raciest . bottom line he has no reason to get involved on that level with the public business. I would think Russia and China and the mid east and the death and destruction of our citizens due to the storms would be on his plate right now. not some guy and a statement he made to his girlfriend. that's spoken harsher countless times each day by all races and back grounds against another , but they do not have money or can draw the news media in for a back patting .
sure what he said is not politically correct but my gosh get over it

What people need to be worried about is how they are doing this from a taped conversation that he had no idea he was being recorded. They are going to end up taking his business and a couple million dollars and his freedom to go to certain places for the rest of his life over a ho that recorded this conversation in order to get the man in trouble. He never even said the N word and they are still making him look like he's a plantation owner that still has slaves. What someone says in private is just that private and if anyone should be in trouble it should be his so called girl friend and the people that paid her for the recording.
