Vacation question

Who takes them, and are they really worth it? Nothing is inexpensive any more, crowds every where, and spend half my time thinking about work. Then when you get back things are worse than when you left[:(] Seems like a waste of time any more........

    Vacation...... Vacation........

What is this word "vacation" that you are using? I have no reference for it......[|)]

When the kids were small our vacations were of two types: visit the grandparents, and go to educational/experiential places such as the National Parks & Museums. Now that the kids are grown and I'm retired, our vacations are more of "during the week, a few days at a non-youthful resort". there are a few places on the Oregon Coast and the Olympic Peninsula that we particularly like. we don't tell anyone that we are going and since we have no "cell" phone or other "personal device" any news can wait until we get back.

Vegas, Disneyland, National Parks, Hawaii etc yes I love it. I get two weeks a year and I'm darn sure not gonna just sit at home. There's a lot to do & see before I kick off.

We used to go on vacation every chance we got back in our younger days. Now that we're old and retired about the only traveling we do these days are occasional day trips to the mountains.

When you're self employed you are either too busy to take off, or if you're not, you're hesitant to spend all that money because you're not too busy to take off.

My family and I are in northern Minnesota right now, at my parents.

My wife's parents live 10 miles away from here, but we stay with mine.

My parents are moving back to Iowa in September, so it's a working vacation.
Doing a bunch of work for them, washing and cleaning out the camper, cutting down trees, taking down deer stands.

Wife and daughters are helping my mom pack up things, getting ready for an estate sale.

Kinda sad, end of an era.

Haven't even been fishing yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Of course we're heading home a couple days before I have to head back to work, to recuperate from "vacation".

My sister and her family are at my place, taking care of the cattle and horses.
She said it's one of the best vacations she's had in a while. Kinda like a dude ranch.

    Go figure.

Ps, anyone looking for a huge cedar cabin on a private lake in northern Minnesota?[8D]

^ This. I seldom take vacations and don't even play blackjack anymore [B)] Going to start taking a 3 day trip anywhere once a month though, gotta start getting some R&R time.

I should add ... I used to sell back all my vacation time as the money is more important. However the company has set new limits, forcing people to take paid time off. In other companies I have known people who quit to go work for other employers who did not yet set limits on cashing in vacation time.

We go to Myrtle Beach in Sept at the beginning of the off season. It is still hot, the beach and water is still beautiful, everything is still open, but during the week there are few lines, and it is easy to get a table at a restaurant. We've figured out that four nights is about our max, otherwise I start getting restless and bored and would prefer to be home. That is the one vacation we take every year. It costs about $1100 for those four nights, but its worth it, we look forward to it all year long.

I get one week, twice a year.

In October, I generally go about 10 minutes from my house.

Then I sit there and wait for a deer to appear.

I kinda doubt that anyone ever laid on their death bed and said "Gee, I sure wish I had worked more instead of enjoying what life has to offer!"
Get out and have some fun.

We go to Paradise, otherwise known as Sanibel Island, every year for Christmas and New years. Nothing like waking up on Christmas morning, getting a cup of Coffee and taking a walk on the beach with no one around. My mind melts for two weeks. We also go every year in may to Key West or the Bahamas. Yes, I need a few vacations a year and love them[;)] Life is not all about work or you get burned out.

The plant I work at shuts down for two weeks over Christmas and New Years. This only uses up five days of the three weeks I started year with. Here recently they reinstated cashing out the unused days at the end of the year.

Our vacation begins the week of Halloween and continues through the second week of December. The furthest we travel is outside of Marietta Ohio For a couple weeks then over to Wood/Ritchie county WV for awhile then back home for rifle season. I take a Summit climber and climb high overlooking bowls, benches, saddles and cuts observing the whitetail rut. Many years ago we would vacation in the Summer to Niagra Falls and different beaches along the East Coast but it was the same scenery every year and the only challenge was trying to find a place to park and a spot to lay on the beach. I prefer the peace and quiet the woods offer and enjoy spending the time in the woods with my Dad the most as he isn't getting any younger and never know when he may not be able to do the things he does now. He's a meat hunter and I'll pass on younger deer in the hopes that they cross his path. Nothing puts a smile on my face as much as seeing the smile on his face when the sun has set on an unsuccessful or successful day in the woods, either way we're blessed to have spent the day in the woods together.

I used to do a lot of that as well since I was traveling a lot. That was well before kids and since I was out of town on projects it was easy to fly the Mrs out for a long weekend to see wine country or go to Mexico for the week or wherever it was I was working. After kids though, we did a whole lot of other stuff. Camping, soccer tournaments etc etc. Now that they are mostly grown it is a matter of whether their breaks (other than summer) line up luckily next year spring break lines up for college and high school so both kids can go. The little one goes to high school in the morning and college in the afternoon so any opportunity to go anywhere during fall or winter break is shot. In 2018 they will be on the same schedule again, but unlikely they will want to hang with the parental units.... If however they want a paid for vacation then they can go to the beach with us.... Retirement is permanent vacation. Been loving it now for eight years.

This year, we took a cruise around the Hawaiian islands, drove down to Phoenix to visit our daughter's family, and have just booked a fall foliage visit to The Greenbrier. Next year, we're treating the family to a week on a houseboat on Lake Powell, and plan a St Lawrence River cruise. Then there's Europe, a return visit to Victoria Canada, and...

    You get the idea.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

We try and take 3 or 4 weekend with a day or two trips a year, waterfall hikes in the mountains is our thing.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

I get 4 weeks a year and yes I take every minute of it. Sometimes it is hanging out at home, sometimes longer trips. Work is hell for a few days when you return, but well worth it.

The Costa Rican rainforest is un-crowded and has lots of things to see now found in your neighborhood. Australia has more people, but the Northern Territory and Tasmania less so, and the seasonal difference can work to give you a little shot of summer in winter.

..Many times, we get to the end of driveway before we decide which way to turn. One year we literally wandered down to South Carolina. Another time to the Dakotas. Drive the interstate for a ways and then get off of it and wander two lane roads. Lot more to see and better eats that way.

We used to go to Sanibel in January and February every year back in the 80's. At times if you had to leave the island especially in the mornings for something you could forget getting back anytime soon. Traffic got so bad that you'd have to set in line for a long time to get across the bridge so we quit going. I hear they built another bridge since then so maybe it's not so bad these days?
