On July 28th, 1914 Austria-Hungary declares war on the Kingdom of Serbia.

On July 31st, Russia mobilizes it's army in defense of Serbia...

On August 1st, Germany mobilizes and declares war on Russia in defense of it's ally Austria-Hungary. Germany also declares war on Russia's ally, France.

On August 4th, Germany invades the neutral country of Belgium. Belgium's neutrality is guaranteed by a treaty with the British Empire, who declares war in response.

Before the end of the year, there will be more than 2 million casualties amongst the participants....by the end of the war, the figure will be 37 million.

All for one member of royalty that never worked in his life.
What would have happened if every one just stayed home?

It appears to me that the assignation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was just sort of the last straw that caused the war. It had been coming for a long time. I think the real reason for the war was tensions over territory in the Balkans. Austria-Hungary competed with Serbia and Russia for territory and influence in the region and they pulled the rest of the world into the conflict through their alliances and treaties.

Anyone who is a fan of the subject should listen to this:

"Blueprint for Armageddon" by Dan Carlin. It's a whole series on the Great War.

Great book on the subject, The Guns of August. Won the Pulitzer Prize in 1964 and well deserved. I have read it 3 times.

To me,the greatest invention of the war was the use of the Aeroplane! A kite with a motor , and the evolution of air warfare!

    This was about money.

It was about corporations and governments vying for market share and as the saying goes "war is the purest form of politics"

Sure they hide the reality as you can't get the public all fired up about those evil (other side) bad guys that need to be killed to protect you children and homes but it comes down to what almost every war is about, wealth, property, resources, ergo money

When our economy collapses or if not ours that does so causing the world to fall with us China or Europe whatever you can be sure the drums of war will be a beating but the news will proclaim the evils of the Russians, the Germans, the Chinese the whoever is required to raise a battle cry

One thing I think is for sure is that after the leaders of the banks around the world figured out that war was profitable after WWI all the wars since then have been bank assisted if not all out the real cause of it. The world bank leaders are controlling our politicians like puppets. I think a lot of politicians don't even realize where the money is coming from that buys their votes.
