A while back I said my Cv shaft was bad making a vibrating noise... it helped but that wasn't the issue. When I did my motor rebuild, I had to take the harmonic balancer / crank pulley off .... now it squeels all the time, high rpm, low rpm, idle... it is not a throwout bearing as many have said. the belt seems to be vibrating at the bottom where it crosses from crank to ?.... does anyone know if a harmonic balancer can cause a vibration during turns, or a high pitch squeal? Almost sounds like a bad belt but they are new.

Obviously, something isn't in harmony and is slightly off key.

    You are welcome.

What kinda car? a Harmonic damp, can come apart and destroy a whole lot of stuff... depends on how its constructed. I know on a mustang the factory one the rubber inside can shift and make the whole car shake from being out of balance, also check to make sure the noise is not comin from your tensioner when they go out the can squeeelllllll

A little light on the details here. What motor? Year?
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

The harmonic balancer has to run true and in line with the other pulleys.
You need to look at it while it's running. If there's any wobble or hop
in any pulley or if there's not enough tension in the belt correct it.

Did not know untill the harmonic balancer crapped out on
my daughters car, but the mustang V-6 has a bad rep for
that. It sounded just like a squeeky belt, and just about made me pull out what little hair I have untill finally I ran it with
no belt at all on it, and it still squeeked.

Make damn sure the engine has the correct balancer and flywheel for the engine. Internally or externally balanced engines require their[:p] own parts inorder to work properly!

take the belt off and run the engine. did the noise go away? yes? then its the belt, no? then it is something elese. if no, spin all idler pulleys and alternator power steering a/c, and see if any of them make noise. will need more info before going further.

If it is in fact the balancer, many are made in three pieces, the center, a rubber ring and the outer metal ring the belt rides on. When the rubber ring is going out (deteriorating), the outer ring can shift.

If your belt has ever been soaked in coolant is is going to chirp or squeal. I don't know exactly why, but coolant soaked into the belt seems to make many belts chirp or squeal, even when the tension is right. Dish soap, really hot water and a scrub brush works to clean the belt. You will likely have to repeat the cleaning a few times. Solvents, brake cleaner or most anything else doesn't seem to help cleaning off coolant much. I have had some good luck with silicon spray especially made for rubber (door seal spray), not normal silicon spray this will attack rubber.

97 Plymouth breeze 2.0 ... squeels in neutral, any gear any rpm clutch in or out... sometimes it won't squeel at all for a day and be loud the next. If I hit a puddle of water it stops

Fan belt, you can try belt dressing but chances are you will need to change it as its glazed.

Did you put the accessory drive belt (serpentine) back in the proper grooves? One groove off will result in noise.

Was the balancer/pulley installed to the original location?

Don't know how you pulled the balancer/crank pulley, but if you did it correctly it should be fine.

Just an FYI, but Harmonic Damper pulleys have FOUR parts; The hub, the pulley ring, the rubber 'damper' and a staple to connect the pulley to the hub for electrical grounding.

    As ever, Dr Pedantic.

PS: it isn't unusual for the belt tensioner to break/lose tension after it's been turned to loosen the belt on high mileage vehicles.

belt is glazed as said here. When water hits it there is the lubracating efect till the water drys off and then it squeels again.

It is the tensioner. Bearings will squeal like a shot hog.

There is no tensioner. There is a set screw on alternator that pulls the alt to tighten it
