Heard some community gossip that was actually about me.

Its nice to hear an 18 million dollar rumor even if I am only 1/18th of the rumor.

Truck driver's know everything. They just don't even know who they are talking to.

Could this be a precursor to things to come?

You mean that all the "Duty, Honor, Country" boys are retiring now that the Messiah is gonna be their CinC? Stands to reason.

Only letter I would get is one telling me not to worry cause they won't call me back.[:)]

I did get a letter a few years back on my 30th anniverary of Joining. It congradulated me on this achevement. It also informe I was now available for call up till I turned 65. That really opened my eyes.

from the time i was a little boy, i wanted to be in the military.

from age 14 to 18, i was involved in a military youth program. i was one of those kids the ate, slept, lived and breathed the military.

the day after i turned 18(parents werent on board) i signed my enlistment papers and entered the delayed entry program(usn)

259 days later, i was medically discharged for an issue that(it is hypothesized) was there all along but wasnt apparent until i started the physical preperations for recruit training. this issue hasnt resolved.

since then, my mindset has shifted. its not what i want to do anymore. ive gone in another direction with my life at their request, not mine.

if they tell me that now, when they need me, that my medical conditions are "waiverable" i will be seriously pissed off.

all of this of course has to do with a draft, not retired call backs. it just seemed like a relevant rant.

I have heard nothing and don't want to. I'm too old for that game anymore.

I was worried about it when OIF kicked off. They USUALLY go for just specialty MOSs. I was just a Logistics guy.

I'm not too old, but I would not be inclined to serve under our future CinC. I would have to respectfully decline, on the basis that I have already got a patch on my right shoulder.

They have been reactivating quite a few helicopter pilots for several years now. Many of the recently retired from the Army civilian instructor pilots I worked with were called back in.Most of them liked being recalled because when they finished their time they re-retired at a higher rate of pay.[;)]

very similar to my time, but condition was "waiverable" and was still declined to re-up...turns out a certain captain had issues, was related to base commander.
without the waiver from A.F. no other branch could sign me either, they were all crying at not being able to take someone who was certified lifeguard, marksman, scuba experience, survival training and some experience with explosives...oh well, when you REALLY need people you can not call me

I can not say how long it has been that way. But when I got out in 1986 I was informed that everyone who served in the Army, Army Reserve or National Guard are placed on "Inactive Reserve" until you die or reach age 65 which ever came first once you completed active service.

Well the checks keep coming. Retired in 93. but not as an officer.
I'd go back in again as a contractor like I did in 03-04. with a
    good UNION wage[:D][:D][:D]

Still on Active Duty here.... have not heard anything about this so called "talk".

Do you have any additional information, such as a MILPER Message number or an email we could look at?

When I was discharged in 62 my active time was 3 years & then 3 years inactive reserves.(for a total of 6, for the additionally challenged).
    When did they change that?

Unless something has changed in the last couple of weeks, there's no mandatory recall, yet.

The Army maintains a volunteer list of available retired officers and NCOs. Like many others, I placed myself on that list on 9/11. They've called or e-mailed me offering both training and combat assignments four times over the past 18 months but either a family or health issue at the moment has precluded my taking them up on it, yet.

"In theatre" recalls are for 14 months (one month refresher training, 365 days in theatre, and one month debrief/outprocessing) while some of the stateside training or support assignments are for two years. Retirees cannot be promoted or hold actual command positions, at least per current policy.

Last e-mail cited a "critical shortage of Majors and Lieutenant Colonels."

They don't have Congressional authority for a mandatory recall, other than volunteers and exceptionally scarce MOS's, yet.

The key word here is "yet."

If the draft is reinstated, there is no other ready source of officers and NCOs to lead those new troops other than recalling retirees. Retirees can be recalled up to their 70th birthday provided the recall has Congressional approval.
