Thinking of retiring and will have to get health insurance. I know AARP has it but I've read some bad reports on that org. lately (nothing about insurance). Do any of you folks have their own & what companies would you recommend?

Thanks guys,

did you know you can be denied if you have more than 14 drinks of alcohol per week.
if a doctor has ever told you you need to cut back on your consumption of alcohol.
if you ever been arested for being intoxicated.
if you ever had a DUI
the wife and i had to apply for new health insurance today because the company said the retirees were using to much insurance and therefore are cancelig it as of oct. 31st.
these questions were on the form and only one about tobacco: do you use tobacco?
now going to pay about $100 more per month with way less coverage. befor we had a $250 deductible, now it is $1000[:(][:(]

So in the past without health insurance when I go into the doctors office to get malignant and pre malignant lesions burned off it cost on the average about 150 dollars. now that I'm paying over 5 times that amount in insurance premiums monthly. I end up paying my part $287
Tell me how this insurance thing works again?

This is not about what it cost or how bad it is. More about something that is bothering me from work.

Guy that got hired before me(he did start before me) Has turned down the company Health Insurance. He is Covered by the state and they cover everything. Not for just one year but two and will get another 2 year extension.

It is getting to not just me but several others have thought like I do. When he became eligible for company Insurance the state Insurance should stop.

From the Oregon WEB page on this.

quote:You will find eligibility and application information about the OHP programs that DHS provides, as well as links to other health resource information.

The Oregon Helps Web site can tell you whether your family might be able to get help from various state and federal assistance programs, including the Oregon Health Plan. This online calculator is only a general guideline.

If you have any questions about how to apply for the Oregon Health Plan, contact the OHP Application Center at 800-359-9517 or your local DHS branch office.

    Are you eligible?

Low-income Oregonians may be eligible for one of these three Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) programs administered by DHS.

The OHP Plus Program is for people who are aged, blind, disabled, under age 19, pregnant or receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits.

OHP Plus includes the no-cost public assistance option of the Healthy Kids Program, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
CHIP is for children and adolescents younger than 19 living in households with incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.
The OHP Standard program provides free or low-cost health care coverage to Oregon residents who have limited income, are ages 19 and older, and do not qualify for traditional Medicaid. DHS will soon have a limited number of openings for Oregon residents who need health care coverage. Add your name to the OHP Standard reservation list to become a potential applicant.

Households may be eligible for other assistance through the Office of Private Health Partnerships (OPHP), such as the Family Health Insurance Assistance Program (FHIAP) or the private insurance option of the Healthy Kids Program, KidsConnect.

    How to apply

To apply for medical assistance under Medicaid (OHP Plus) or any of the Healthy Kids program options:

Use the OHP application packet; or
Fill out and submit the online OHP application.

You can request printed versions of the application packet from these locations:

OHP outreach sites, including migrant health centers, Federally Qualified Health Centers, hospitals and county Health Departments
OHP Application Center, 800-359-9517 or TTY 800-621-5260
Add your name to the OHP Standard reservation list to become a potential applicant. The reservation is not an application. If your name is selected from the list, you will receive an OHP Standard application.

Notice the languages that they have on there. Same guy brags that his wife is going to school so does not work. Has not worked since 1997.

I would like to retire this fall and asked HR for the cost of our retiree insurance. I was shocked to read that it will be $900./month. I have Medicare but my wife does not. It would drop to about $600./month when she does. For those that have purchased private insurance, is this a reasonable cost for a retiree benefit? I have never bought insurance before. What companies should I check? Thanks guys,

That is a lot of money to deny claims with LOL

My brother gets his insurance through a group rate through the Dleaware County Chamber of Commerce here in Upstate NY. It is $1863.00 per quarter with a group rate. He is 59 years old , single. Friggin ridiculous.

Hate to tell you Jim, but that sounds pretty good for two people and a low deductible.

Yeah, that's a bargain. Let's hope there's nothing in the fine print that would let them off the hook if things went bad for you.

Health care insurance just can't be cheap. Federal employees' most popular plan is Carefirst BC/BS, which costs $14,000/year for a family, & that still leaves a few thousand year in deductibles, co-pays, & things that aren't covered. (Employees pay $5,000 a year, & the gummint pays $9,000.) Pre-existing conditions are always covered.

So, $7,000 a year seems pretty cheap.

Most health insurance plans have overhead of 20-25%, which include multimillion $ salaries for the executives.

I was truly blessed to work for the company I did when I got sick.
Less than 3 years there, when I became disabled.
Got 3 months full pay, then went on long term disability @ 70%.
    After a year, I was considered retiree/disabled.
I am presently paying $ 138 a month, for excellent coverage, including prescriptions, and I have multiple health issues.
The company is self insured, and they are the best I have ever worked for.
If it had not been for their insurance, I would most certainly no longer be around.
I did lose my dental, and eye coverage after the year was up, but I sure can't complain.
I know lots of people who are perfectly healthy, and pay 5 or 6 times what I do.
Best of all, even though I am only 50, as long as I pay the premium, I can receive company coverage for life!
There are still some excellent companies to work for in the USA!

Hell I don't even make 1700 a month. For that I could pay for my own health care. More or less. Health care is a scam.

I pay $2880 per year for family coverage...Medical, Dental and Eye. $700 family deductible...80/20 after that for Medical....my company picks up the other 85% of the premium.

Speaking of insurance, I just got my bill for the next quarter.
$1,563.45 to be exact, so basically $521.15 a month.

I do have to say that I have excellent insurance though. I can go wherever I want,.....no approvals needed for any diagnostic testing either.

Mine is a little different than a lot of folks in the respect that I have no co-pays. I simply pay the discounted amount until I reach 1K out of pocket. At that point, I pay 20% up to the next 1K out of pocket,.......after that I am on 100% coverage.

I also have one of the best scrip coverages I have heard of. I pay 7 bucks per 30 day supply of ANY med needed.
If there is a generic, I have to use that of course, but if there isn't it still only costs me 7 bucks.

Nexium is crazy expensive, as in over 200 bucks for a 30 day supply,.....I pay 7 bucks since there is no generic.
