Question about heart rate?

I was sitting here in my recliner a little while ago and my heart started skipping beats and it's still doing it. About every 8 to 10 beats it skips one.

Any of you guys ever had anything like that? It feels sort of strange to be taking my pulse and then there's a skip. It sort of makes my chest feel light or takes my breath away a little.

My moms heart started to racing a couple of years back and they installed a pacemaker to her heart but she's 86. I never heard her mention any skipped beats. I would call her but she's already asleep by now.

Anyway I thought I check with you all to see if anybody's had that to happen before?

If you have shortness of breath or dizziness.. get to the hospital. Relax it most likely isn't too much.

Sounds like PVCs, everyone has them, but some folks can't sense them.

If you haven't felt this before I would get an EKG asap incase it is a more serious arrhythmia.

It can be caused by your electrolytes being off as well. Try some Gatorade, or even better V8 juice if you have it.

Long story short,...could be harmless, or very serious. It's best to not take chances if this is not a normal thing with you.

my wife's heart acts up she has worn monitors several times over the last few years , the cardo doc's tell her its is skipping adding ? a beat but really is ok no need to worry .. she has had it checked several times by different doctors

If I were you I would get it checked ..
may be nothing but better to be safe
heart attacks have different symptoms and some times none
I had by pass surgery 11 years ago had no issues just a gut feeling something was not right ( passed every test they tossed at me ) except the cath and I had them do that one for me ..

The first time I had them I went to ER.
EKG showed my heart wasn't skipping it was beating twice fast then waiting till the next beat was due.
Doc said to lay off the caffeine.
It was a really strange feeling but I mostly just ignore it when it happens now.
Like select-fire said if you have any other symptoms get to the doc fast.
Especially left arm or jaw pain.
If you do have those pains chew 2 aspirin then call 911.

i get it from nerves sometimes , never a good feeling, skips or races out of the blue, sometimes i can even see it skip on my wrist

had a halter monitor put on a few years ago, it occurred 600 times in 24 hours , doc said that was very acceptable

Thanks for the fast replies. I think I panicked when I first noticed it and that made it even worse. Now that I don't think I'm going to kick the bucket any minute it seems to have leveled off.

Wheew, this getting old is killing me!! [:)]

Premature Ventricular Contractions...that sounds like something that shouldn't be talked about in mixed company. [:D]

I take Atenolol to correct/control that condition. I have had it for many years. My regular doc put me on a monitor to wear for a day and determined it was stress related. I changed jobs, reducing my stress level, and the problem went away, or nearly so.

One night it got really bad and I ended up in the hospital for observation. In the morning, all was back to normal, but it worried my cardiologist enough to give me some medicine. I no longer can feel the skips, at least not very often, and my resting rate is down. A positive side effect of the Atenolol is that it lowers the blood pressure a bit too.

I suggest seeing your doctor as soon as possible. I have been prone to bronchitis or asthma attacks for years. Last year, I had noticed that I was very short of breath when climbing up a flight of stairs. Thought I was coming down with bronchitis again.

Went to the doctor and after listening to my heart, did EKG. When the nurse pulled the results off, she commented that this doesn't look good. He referred to to a cardiologist, that I saw the next day. The next day saw me in the hospital where they checked to verify that I didn;'t have any blood clots. Fortunately, I didn't.

I was diagnosed with arterial fibrillation or 'afib'. It has finally been corrected after several attempts with ablation procedure(zapping your heart back into sync).

"Shortness of breath" or "difficulty breathing" can run the gamut of slightly scary- can't catch your breath, to 1/2 a teaspoon in; 1/4 teaspoon out.
If your heartbeat is also racing, and you are panting like a dog trying to catch the Concorde; get to the Cardiac ER asap.
Chances are good that it's nothing, but you can't be certain.
Chest pain & radiating pain from shoulder/arm are good signs that you may be having a cardiac event, but lots of folks only feel mild indigestion, like ya get from pounding a warm, flat Dr. Pepper.

Bottom line; if your parents/grandparents have any history of cardiac distress, you may be looking at your future medical inconveniences.

I've held off replying to this thread, because I knew there would be those more knowledgeable than me. (Barzillia, etc )

I've had the whole add a beat, skip a beat thing happen my whole life.

Finally in 2005' I was diagnosed with a bad Mitral valve, and underwent surgery most Rikki tic.

I still have occasional bouts of A-fib. It occurs spontaneously, for no apparent reason, and usually leaves me on one knee, light headed, dizzy, sweating like a pig, and nauseous. That whole scenario, has become much more infrequent since my surgery, but occasionally still happens. Scary when it does.

I would agree with others here. Go get checked out Smitty.

    How are you today ?

I woke up this morning feeling fine, no skipped beats or fast beats or anything. Then I drank a cup of coffee and it started doing it again almost immediately. So it looks like I'll be cutting out caffeine in the future.

Since my recently surgery my whole system has been out of whack. I think maybe nerves are another thing that may be adding to the problem.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I appreciate it.

Glad to hear you feel better Smitty, but you should still get an EKG this week,...especially since this seems a new thing for you.

A person needs to know if they have any anomalies such as QT prolongation, or T/wave issues just to name a couple. The QT interval is very important to know because a number of commonly used pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics, can cause QT prolongation in and of themselves. The combination with an already existing condition could be very serious.

In other words,...go get a freakin' EKG this week![:o)]
