We went to the Alabama homecoming game yesterday in Tuscaloosa. They played Mississippi State. Larry's father actually played for Miss. State back when he was younger....and WOULD HAVE played for Alabama if they hadn't tried to get him until after he signed with Miss. State. So, picture my son....who is 15 wearing a Miss. State "hoodie" at this game.
It was me, my son, my husband and my brother. My brother knew people that were set up to tailgate in the business section....so we were guests of Time Warner for the afternoon. MMMMMmmmm....Dreamland Ribs, baked beans, hot wings and CHAIRS TO SIT IN! (Which I appreciate very much after walking all over the campus checking things out.)
Everyone was having fun and it was really nice. This one drunk guy yelled "WOOOO!!! ROLL TIDE!" in my son's face...but other than that things were very fun. Even that little event wasn't aggressive or threatening....just having fun. We saw Gumby....I didn't question "why is Gumby here" its obviously one of those anything goes type events.
It came time for the game....about an hour before kickoff...so the crowd started to all travel in the stadium direction. We found the gate we were to go in....and directly inside they were "renting" cushions. So we picked up some because who turns down the opportunity for a cooshy seat? My brother got two hot chocolates ($5 each) and we started walking toward our seats.
Walking out to where you see the field is AWESOME.....especially for the first time! I am sure my son was exhilarated to be there. We found the seats....and this is where everyone's hopes and dreams were MASHED TO BITS!!!!
I am tall (5'9")....but not freakishly tall. Well....I thought this until now anyway. I couldn't sit in my seat!!! If I spread my knees outward my knees were still mashed against the hard plastic of the seat in front of me. It was painful. My husband is 6'3 and my son is 6' tall.....so it was worse for them. My poor brother....he is 6'8".....which IS freakishly tall, but we had an isle seat for him (which normally fixes things well enough.) Not this time. He couldn't even sit in the seat....so he was stuck sitting on the steps!!!
It was terrible. The morons in the isle with us kept going back and forth....so not only were we contorted, but constantly having to move and shuffle things around so we could let people out.
We left a little after halftime. We couldn't take any more. My knees hurt still....and Larry has a bit of a limp today. We found out after we were in the car that Mississippi State Scored....that might have been nice for my son to have seen....but we left just before that (I guess.)
Whoever designed the stadium is a moron. I sent an email to the stadium this morning letting them know how upset I am with last night and another one to Stub Hub telling them they need to let people know you have to be a pre-teen tiny person to sit comfortably in the Bryant Denny Stadium.
We did see a young man dressed as Thor walking down the road on the way out....complete with yellow wig! Another highlight was when the ENTIRE STADIUM BOOED when they showed a guy wearing an Obama mask in the stands.
If it weren't for the crowd being so much fun and the campus being so nice....I would have been deeply let down by going to that game yesterday. I know I will never go to another one....not unless I hear of major changes in the seating anyway (which will not happen anytime soon.)
Ihop on the way home was wonderful!!!! We got in before the crowd took over the place....but we were stuck in snail-like traffic on the way home all the way to Birmingham.
The game started at 7:30 pm....we got home at 2am!!! (I am NOT used to those hours.)

Everyone should go at least once I guess.
I have been more than once, but no more for me.
