Insulin cost for Min Schnauzer

Our Min Schnauzer is diabetic and requires insulin. Just had his prescription refilled at Walgreens.

Their retail price is $390.99 for a vial (lasts about 5 months).

By buying him a membership in Walgreens Prescription Drug Plan ($20.00 a year), the charge dropped to $244.79.

Quite a savings and they are still making a profit.

I look at "drug discount plans" the other way. I think that the "regular" price of the insulin at your store is $244.79; the "retail price" is just a fake price that few people actually pay. You may find that some other stores, such as Costco, have a "regular price" that is less.

I haven't checked out insulin, but there are several mail order veterinarian drug suppliers who have reasonable prices. In fact, I know some folks who buy their own "human" drugs that way to save money.

I used to laugh at people who would spend so much money on a damn dog.....until I dropped 2k on emergency surgery for mine.

We have a diabetic dog that gets insulin (vetsulin) which runs about $90 for 10ML. Supposed to be the only FDA approved insulin for dogs and cats and we get ours from Allivet on line for about half what our vet sells it for.

The last dog we had with diabeties was a littermate to this one and we used the regular insulin and it worked, but we found he was diabetec too late to extend his life for more than 2 years.

Anyway, if you're using plain old insulin, check the price of the same product at a WalMart pharmacy. Last time I looked they sold the same insulin as Walgreens, but for less than a third as much.

Good luck to you and your hairy family member.

Check out sam's club prices. I got some meds there for Allie for $50something, and they were $180 everywhere else. You don't have to be a member, either. Costco is the same way.

I always check GoodRx online which shows various prices in the area for particular drugs. This go around Walgreens was the cheapest with the membership. All others were $30 higher and up.

Wife worked for a HMO. One of the benefits was discounted prescriptions. Dog needed meds and they filled the prescription. Next Union contract that was eliminated.

Yes, vetsulin is the preferred choice. It sells for anywhere from $36.00 to 45.00 online for a 10ml vial which is 400IUs. Initial dosage is 0.5 IU insulin/kg of body weight where a kg=2.20462262 pounds.

A 20 pound dog would take 4.5IUs per day which translates to a bottle lasting right at 89 days. Basically you could get 6 months worth for less than 80 bucks in this scenario.
